hi all i have hit a dilema i will be planning to bang a rb into my lc and have hit a brick wall as to manual or auto box .
i do enjoy the manual over the auto but if i go with either it will need to be a strong box and i dont want to find out the hard way (changing boxes costantly)
i will be going for around 400 hp

after some research i have come with a few options:

1 r33 5 sp box (needs tunnel mods)
2 rb30 5 sp turbo box no mods (as far as tunnel is concerned )
3 trimatic or other auto beefed up

my main problem is with pros cons to fit either .

it will be a weekend worrior for powercruise and such so it will get some track duties

just want some opinions and experiences even if not related to this combo

cheers

Auto for drag racing. Cant say drag racers are not real men. Unless it's a female driver of course.

Nah autos are crap - where is the skill in just putting you foot down and holding it there? Drag racing would be much more fun and driver skill would be a bigger part of it if everybody ran manuals. (Talking street cars here)

Now I know autos are quicker but thats not my point, nor am I saying it doesn't take skill to get a quick auto down the strip.

You see a Torana in a car park.

Flares, spoilers, scoops, stripes etc....
You think "Oooooh, nice car! I'll mosey on over and have a look!"
Yes! Nice and shiney and big fat wheels! Pure muscle!

Then........after you've looked at the important bits............you look inside the car.
And there it is, smack in the middle of the console, a DAMN T/BAR!
Instant 10 demerit points.

Even those megawotevaratshit shifters can't take the place of a chrome stick with a knob on top.

Why not use a R33 auto? HALT! Don't start attacking me just yet, hear me out!

Think about how cheap the R33 auto's are. NOBODY wants them. You could probably buy one with the change that's fallen down the back of your rear seat. Surely there's someone out there that has beefed up these boxes? What about a manual valvebody in one so you can control what gear it's in- no 'can't find it, grind it' situations and less shock loading on the diff etc. when your ripping through the gears. You could also use something like a B&M shifter with a knob on top and a leather boot around it and people will think it's a manual. (Shhhh)

I've driven a R33 GTS4 with an auto and a bigger turbo (no idea at all what sort of power increase but it was a LOT more than standard) and although it was 'boring and no fun' like a manual it still 'got up and boogied'.

Let me just make this clear- I like auto's in big cars and manuals in small cars. All my cars are auto's- just happened to be that way, wasn't a conscious choice...
Ever been in a traffic jamb in a manual big car? Drives ME nuts anyway.

Auto for best track times, manual for BEST all-round GRIN factor!! :spoton: :spoton: :spoton:
If i had coordination issues & had to have an auto :blink2: :blink2: :blink2: i would go a tricked up Trimatic.

I've now got an R33 5 speed in my LJ, had to stretch the tunnel up a bit to reduce gearbox angle (had some tailshaft destruction issues, mainly due to Hardy spicer crap slip yokes :soapbox: DO NOT USE, USE FACTORY IF AFTERMARKET BILLET UNIT NOT AVAILABLE), only other mod was new hole for the stick (about 5" further back, then shorten the hand brake lever). I did however grind some material off the gearbox around the starter hole (basically trimmed it back to the shape of the starter) to give some clearance. Haven't tried an RB30ET box (could find one when i was looking for under $1500, bout 7-8 years ago) so i bought a Supra 5 speed conversion kit from CRS. R33 replaced the Supra when the motor made 389rwhp & the clutch slipped (that's another story  but sorted now) and my tuner was concerned about snapping the input shaft. RB30ET boxes are pretty old now & R33 boxes aren't much younger so if possible "drive before you buy". Got my R33 box from a wrecker, took 3.5 monthes to fit it (& chassis kit etc etc..) first start noisy box & only a 3 month warranty :Headbang2: :Headbang2: :Headbang2:
All sorted now (till the next thing head f*ck), got it tuned this week, 403rwhp    I had traction issues before!!! Haven't drive it yet, whoop ass Wednesday it is!!

An old saying i remember from a few years ago,
Auto for racing
Manual for hoons(no offence)
I wanted a manual for my torana, but behind 650hp dont think so.
Now i have full manual valve body C4.

The new Tremec Magnum is rated at 700 horses and 750 ft pounds of torque, so power is not a real problem and they are quite cheap for a new box.

Yes, its similar to the 6060 they use in the HSV 427 but a little stronger, but its for the aftermarket. It has the shifter in the right spot and a manual speedo drive. You can buy from Jegs, Summit etc for $2795

That sounds almost too good to be true! Do they have many bell-housings available etc yet?

Looks like I'm seriously outnumbered on this one!
I always have a ball driving a full manual auto with a decent hi-stall. :joystick:
