hi all
isnt it a pain in the ass to work out where to put your gauges in your car. I didnt want to drill holes in my dash or centre console, and i didnt want them outside like drag cars, and i certainly wanted to be able to see them, without having to look down, or in the glovebox , etc, etc.

So I had an idea, pull out the ashtray and use the screws in there to hold a bracket.

So here I go

Posted Image
the bracket, ( made out of stainless after a cardboard template was made first )

Posted Image
the back of the dash spliced and soldered for lights and power , note green wire for tacho to be run from the coil.

Posted Image
the new dash looms pulled through for everything , note tacho wires for steering column . and bracket mounted in ashtray spot

Posted Image
the bracket in place, no extra holes! And can hold 6 gauges ( three on top / three on bottom )

Posted Image
bracket with three gauges ( my view )

bracket with three gauges ( cops view :D )

Have also fitted monster tacho since but have no shots as of yet.

Cheers Julian

Do autometer make the A/f gauge in 2 and 5/8 or only 2 and 1/16th? I got my tacho and oil pressure/ temp gauges around the sterring coloum...easy to see and look alright...

Very impressive! Neat install and it doesn't affect the clean look of the interior etc.

hi barny
not sure about the A/f gauge in 2 and 5/8 , i just got the samller one pretty cheap so thats whats going in my car, still to do the o2 sensor yet in the exhaust.

hi tiny
not sure about the head impact regs, I know you are not allowed to prevent your head from hitting the dash pad, which is still okay and clear, maybe someone can shed some light on this?

So is it a legal requirement to hit your head on the crash padding for a RWC? :spoton:

Anyway, good idea for us non-smokers.

they only come in the 2/16 size barny.

going on my fair knowledge of adr's i would say that the gauges are ok but the sharp edge of the bracket is a worry.
i would run some kind of edging around it.

To me it looks like you would hit the guages before you hit the bracket. In any case, a flat file could remove the edges in a couple of minutes.

I'd be adding a bit of edging or protection or something on that sheet. Whether it has had the edges filed or not, smacking your head on the edge of that in an impact would open up a fair inspection split in your head.

My guages hang from a bracket over the ashtray and I was required to place padding on it for the RWC. Bit different because I don't have any on top but still...

Peace,

some black padding may actually improve the appearance of the setup. Don't hesistate if the law says you have to.

i reckon if you mass produced them they would sell. i know that it would solve all my guage related woes.... but saying that with the ashtray gone where would i put all my change? yet another problem presents itself.......
