Pins are gone
So its splitpins or make your own
6mm stainless I think ... but my memory is going

Hi Jono and Datto
Zinc plated not stainless.
6mm sounds a little bit big. Check the size of the holes in the caliper with a drill bit just to be sure.

Cheers
Dave.

Will do Dave
A lot of the 4WD calipers I've worked on have a
similar brake pad pin setup, I'm sure theres gotta
be something close in diameter & depth & just wire
tying them in. Used to work for ABS so might drop in
& see if I can scrounge their shelves for pins.
If I find something that'll work I'll post up what
I find.

Hi Jono

Torana brake pad guide pins are 4mm dia.

Posted Image

Top pin with hair clip (65mm shank length) is an original pin suit std 6cyl caliper and will just suit XU1 caliper.
Short split pin (70mm shank length shortest side) suit std 6cyl caliper will not suit XU1 caliper.
Long split pin (90mm shank length shortest side) is longer than is needed for XU1 caliper.

Have you got anti-squeal shims, will post a pic of one when I can find it.

Cheers
Dave.

Top pin with hair clip is one of the originals from my 4/73 LJ, parts book lists these pins for LJ 6cyl disc brakes.
Pin for LC is a different Part No. but hair clip is same.

Cheers
Dave

Gday Dave, how've ya been John?

Managed to get a 5mm drill bit thru but a little snug.

No pins in stock at ABS so rang PBP & nuthing
there (datto was right...numpties)

Thanx for the above pic, only just read that the
early calipers had the pins & clip & later the spit pin.
So mine being later I'm off looking for split pins, tried
Cov's but no luck. I dont find it strange that my Trana had
pins & clips only on 1 side, some of the previous owners
repairs still have me shaking my head but luckily nothing permanent.

So I've got 2 Pins & clips for a standard caliper to swap if someone
needs them.

Yeah Dave still got the shims, just a little warped
I'll stick them in the press for a bit

G/day John

As I said the pins with hair clips were the originals in my calipers when I bought my 4/73 LJ. I believe them to be period correct and the LJ parts book supports my belief that they were the factory fitted item as well as being the genuine replacement part sold by Holden dealers.
A friend had a 6/73 LJ SL 4dr with factory fitted disc brakes and his calipers had the same pins as mine.
Another friend had a 9/73 2dr S factory 202, 4spd & disc brakes and his calipers had split pins. :dontknow:
I currently use split pins in my XU1 calipers.
The shorter split pins in my pic came from a Torana at a local wrecking yard - LC OR LJ can't remember.
You wouldn't want pins to be too tight in the holes. 5mm dia. hole with 4mm dia. split pin.
Try an engineering supplies. Shouldn't be too hard to find suitable split pins??
Those longer split pins in my pic were bought from Dunlop IBC about 18 years ago.

Cheers
Dave.

Got some this morning no problem.
These ones are 80 x 5mm but they actually measure 4.5mm.
They fit good, not tight & no binding on the pads & shims.
The 4mm pins were just too loose in the caliper hole, they
measured in at 3.5mm.

The 80 x 5 pins protrude enough & can trim a little off
if you need.

Is it possible to install a much wider shim / plate and run ventilated rotors with the LJ calipers?

Yes.... but finding a rotor to match is the trick
But really... its abit of a small pad if you plan on going fast
But I guess every little bit helps

Good to know. I was thinking a Torana drilled HQ rotor turned down.
For the time it will take, I think I will continue down the HQ path (under 13s)
