Hey guys. Ive done a little bit of work on the LJ this weekend.

Gave it a clean, which made the freshly Cut & Polished paint come up proppa good.
Got the radio worked out (2 way home speaker between the seats)
Cleaned up the engine bay; painted the air cleaner, wire brushed the inlet manifold, cleaned grease and oil off the rocker cover.

Cleaned the interior....... AGAIN! Bout time to get me some seat covers, i reckon.

Question Time- I'm going to put new speakers in the rear parcel shelf, and in the front kick panels. to do this, I need to make new panels, out of MDF. How thick should the MDF be?

Cheers, RIM

MDF is carcenogenic. I know when I transport the stuff in my van, it gives me headaches within 15 minutes. The headache leaves around 30 minutes after I drop it off. It won't affect everybody in the same way, but I thought I'd mention it.

You cut it with a mask, you then SEAL it. Once it's sealed, you paint it or carpet it or whatever. All MDF should be sealed after modifying it.

EDIT: Yeah it doesn't affect me either, or not that I know of. Doesn't matter IMO, if it affects anyone it could hurt you without knowing it. Still seal it.

I have and will continue to make kick panels out of 3mm MDF now that may seem a tad thin but by the time you glue some decent carpet on there they are plenty strong enough. The hole for the speakers doesn't seem to weaken it either - not once the speakers are screwed in...

And finally no, it doesn't give me a headache but then at my age I have probably breathed in a whole heap of carcenogens (many before we realised what they were) not to mention working for some years with asbestos and of course the thing many of us did years ago was to blow the brake dust off the drums and no one at the time said don't breathe that in.....

Cheers

Of course it will be sealed. if i can get a match for my brown dash, ill use that. If not, "Purr Pull" it is!

How hard is it to pull a dash out of an LJ? I'd love to paint the metal bits body colour.

Herne, do you also use those UDF (?) screws/bolts that Flamenco suggested in the other thread? I'm intending to make some up pretty soon, not sure how to mount them though... yet

UDF Bolts?? No idea what or where...

If when screwing in the kick panels - then I use black coloured self tappers.
The one thing people will realise with me is I am not and probably never will be an 'orginality' buff. I dont care what people do to their Torana's it's just good to see them on the road.

Not sure which thread you were referring to Heath - the one where someone asked about kick panels in their LC/LJ? All I remember saying about MDF kick panels was that you need to allow for the fact that they won't sit underneath the door seals like the originals do (if using thick MDF).

yeah, i had a look today and found that I'll probably only use MDF for the rear Parcel shelf. Based on what Flamenco said above.

instead, I'll get some outdoor speakers, and bolt them in under the dash.

check that out, it shows my current setup.

I cleaned my spark plug leads today :D.

That is all.

Oh, and trialled my HK's 14inch wheel on the back of the torry. No Go, it scrubbed with no weight in the car at all. i think i need me some minitubs. :D
