Has anyone tried removing the bottom stud and replacing it with a bolt to act as a drain, or is the stud screwed into a blind hole?

The studs are a splined stud that is pressed in from the inside of the housing. They are a similar style to axle studs.

It would be easier to weld in a drain plug than it would be to replace the stud with a bolt.

I put a another diff centre in the car and I noticed it has a grub screw in the bottom ofthe cast diff centre, to use as a drain!

What have I done??

I put the open diff centre in without a problem, then inserted the right axle without a problem, but when I tried to insert the left (short end) axle, it stopped with about 30 mm to go. I looked down the shaft and noticed a pin is protruding very slightly where the splines are. I compared this to the original diff centre that I removed but I cannot see where a pin might come through, making me think the spider gear assembly is modified to convert it to a locker (although the spider gears are still there).

So my question is, can I possibly knock the pin back enough to get the axle in (using a tapered steel bar or similar) or do I need to take the centre out again?

I think I know how I will be spending the wet weekend (doh)!

i just use a drill pump to suck it dry peice of piss but that is if you have the drain plug and then filling is the reverse process.the required amount is placed in a container and sucked up back into the diff .easy as.

with my race car i just fill it back up thru the breather tubes.
