hey guy's, easter sunday i went for my first blat down the strip in my torana. did four runs all up, last two were 17.289 and 17.219 i think. not sure exactly cause the time slips are at other home....they were both in the 17 2's though. i'll scan in the time slips when i get acsess to internet again. speeds were 78 and 79 mph...so not terrably bad. had fairly shitty reaction times around the .9's. did some really really good skids though considering what i'm working with. was doing better burnouts than the 13 second streeters so i'm happy there. got many compliments. the ones in the picks below are all in second gear, speedo siting around the 45-50 mph mark. last burnout pick was takena bit after i got off the throttle, note i have a little bit of opposite lock there, was just finishing correcting her when she decided chaseing the marshals would be fun when the camera went off lol.

Just make sure you place the pic in the Drag Time Register thread so I can update the register.

Get yourself a 3.9:1 centre out of a sunturd
You'll see a marked drop in your times
Also make sure you weld it up so your not single wheeling
And get some nice sticky gumballs for the back (slicks prefferably)

2.78 with those massive rear tyres (guessing 205/65 15) would be killing you...bet it goes gr8 on the highway.

ok my memory was a tad out, best time was 17.214 and best mph was 79.787.

yes it has large backs, 205/60/15's. and yes, it goes well on the highway. i was holding it in third for the whole quarter, passing the traps at 5100 rpm, and i pulled damb near 80mph doing that. i have had her up to a tad over 100mph on the highway (ssssshhhhhh) and she was still pulling fairly well. not bad for what she is really.

i am currently saving up for a welder, then when i get that (soon) i will begin saving up for my new driveline. three months that should all be sitting in the shed slowly going in hopefully. will consist of a w58 supra box, spooled 3.55 volvo diff, tweaked suspension, and atm looks like 245/50/14's on the back. tyre size isn't confirmed yet though...those particular ones are worth $250 each so i might try to find something cheaper.

after having done that i'll take it back with the current motor and try to get into the mid 16's or so. then a few months more i should have the 202 all set up and will be shooting for 14's....then i'll hook up the giggle gas....

basicaly i hope to be running high 13's within the next 12 months. dont' know if i will or not but i'll give it my best shot.

80 mph should see around 16.3 when it all hooks up
Changing the diff ratio will make it faster for et but shouldn't change mph
Ideally for drags you want to be pulling max rpm in top at the finsih line (theoretically)
This doesn't translate to a nice daily driver though.

yeah 5000 is around the max rpm for the little motor. runs out of steam around the 5 mark, will happily pull harder in the lower gears but also likes to bend valves around the 6000 mark as i discovered one night out playing.

and yeah, i realize the only thing that will really change the mph is engine power, and while im' on that anyone wouldent happen to have a calculator to get a guestimate of my cars hp at the tyres from that mph by any chance??? i'm thinking 90-100???

I put 2310lbs and 79.8 mph into a calculator and it says 110hp at the flywheel. Might give you a rough idea?

Yeah, i'd estimate around 100rwhp (about 80rwkW) from the little 173!! I'd be very interested to know what kind of camshaft you are running too (not bad times considering your setup)!!

My UC with 3.08:1 diff and a blown exhaust valve on cylinder 1 in the 202 only managed 17.8 down the strip, not bad for a busted ass motor, but im really impressed with your 173!! Fortunately now i have a worked 179HP which is in the 14's, so i cant complain!

Keep practising mate you'll see 16's with the 173!

Reading this thread my 173 goes better than I thought. I was doing 78mph for a 17.8 with a stock bottom end yella terra head extracters and 2" exhaust, celica 5 and 3.08 diff. Hmm I need to launch a lot harder. . . should be good for 17.3 or something, never will find out V8, hopefully, will be in soon.
