Aaahhhhh, that brings back some memories : )

I did a kombi camper for a friend a few years ago. Was a pretty rusty unit, but turned out quite well.

Don't you just love the big flat panels that aren't straight from the factory : )

Plus, to top it off, it was a rust bucket too : )

Good luck with yours, enjoy the sanding and look forward to seeing how it looks finished :spoton:

Hi

Has anyone watched the show that was on FOXTEL recently. The VW Kombi scene is huge in the UK.

Cheers

They are super cool when they are ratty, or if they are retrofitted with worked Porsche motors and shit hehehe. The mint original looking ones don't do heaps for me but I'm interested in any project that people are dedicating serious hours to.

Years ago i helped a bloke i knew restore one. He was a Mercedes factory trained mechanic & he changed the engine to i think it was a 2.0ltr Porsche engine ??, He loved them, the collection of old German cars he had was mind blowing. It was a shame he got me to repaint it the original poo brown, would've looked alot nicer most any other colour but that.

yeah that will be right with the 2ltre thats what this one has in it. i know the brown you are talking about haha. the owner of this doesnt know what colour he will be doing this one yet he changes his mind every day. last time i spoke to him he was thinking of doing a chess board paint job on the roof so who knows what it will turn out like lol

Looks like it's coming along nicely. Brings back memories of the brown one lol. Also for some reason brings back memories of another obscure car this German bloke had & loved. It was an 1965 NSU Prinz, it looked like a Fiat Bambino & i think it had a rear mounted 990cc motor bike engine in it. It's the only one i've ever seen. Don't know about checker board paint on the roof of the Kombi Posted Image Each to their own i guess.

lol yeah i dont know about the roof either but i just spoke to the owner and he isn't doing that anymore.i don't think he will make his mind up untill the paint is in his gun.i never heard of that car. the owner of this kombi also owns a vw karmann ghia fully restored, thats a weired looking car but it's in mint condition and looks awsome.

2k primer was suposed to be on this weekend but when we took the windows out there is abit of rust that needed attention. if all goes to plan primer will be on wednesday rubbed down thursday and painted saturday (fingers crossed)

I think the checkerboard roof would be sweet. Like what they used to do on the old morris minis : )

The rust in the front step looks familiar. I think that's a factory option on these things. The one I did had the same problem on both sides.

There are rust repair panels available but it was just as easy to make it from scratch.

that has turned out really neat! alot neater than the patch i have done. i just used abit of rust kill around the panel i welded in. the owner wasn't to fussed about the step part because most of it is covered and thats why i just made a few little patches up otherwise i would of got the rust panels for it. i would of rather put a complete panel in there it just makes a much neater job.

Just finished watching it. I recommend anyone who is attempting rebuilding any car, let alone a Kombi, to watch it. poor bloke had absolutly no luck on his side at all. Another good series to watch is Mark Evans 'Is Born' group of rebuilds. That was the series that made me take my first step into the world of car rebuilding.

Back on topic - yldlj Great job so far, can't wait to see it finished.
