VR calais Street stocker (speedway car)

I bought a VR calais from a workmate about 3 years ago for my old man who was planning to turn it into a street stocker and have it running in a few months.....
Well that never quite eventuated as he changed his mind and we also started gettin the purple torry ready for paint etc.
But anyway, we swapped in a VK K frame and put in a healthy little 202 and varijet.
Car was a stat write off from saltwater flood damage and basically came as a near bare shell, no motor etc, we sold off the electric window gear and some other bits and then we stopped.
Its sat next to the shed for the last couple years, but after realising he didnt have enough to head to the states and bring back a wingless sprintcar, he has gotten back into this.
Over the last couple weekends we stripped the car down to a shell, no doors, windows etc.
Then came the fun job of heating and scraping off all the sound deadening.
Ive got to grab some photos of the finished floor, but once we were done, and primed it, it looks great!
Anyway, once that was done it was cage time, so off to my uncles house (dont have 3 phase in rays shed, so we are storing the tube bender at his joint)
Cage is about 50% in there now, bought a bunch of alloy sheets to panel the interior and doors over, Ive started cutting everything but the skins off the doors (weight reduction )
So we are doing pretty well again.
With no weight limits on cars in the class, the lighter the better! and we are so far looking pretty darn light!
the other interesting thing I discovered was the difference in weight between "stockies"
Ive got a few different sets, and some of them are atleast 75% HEAVIER than others, its really weird.
I'll grab some more photos next time we are doing some work, but fingers crossed he will be ready for the start of the season this year

Rip into it with a set of holesaws mate!
Good thing it's getting properly barred out because a modern car with no screens would be really bloody flexible! hahaha

Fist time i have seen a old red donk in a VR. Iv seen rb30/26 and gen 3 chevs shoved in.
You dont have to be scared of smashing it as replacement shells are all stacked 4 high in wreckers everywhere.

Cages for them are pretty extensive, Ray startedf off racing toranas in street stockers back in the early 80s before moving onto faster things, so its a bit of a return for him! haha
but yeah, good CHEAP fun!!
Holesaws are definitely coming out Heath! all the rear panelling, dash, etc etc, anywhere we can get away with it!
The 202 looks suprisingly good in there though!

An earlier Commodore like a VH would surely be a bit too 'nice' to put on a speedway track

Spoke to the bloke next door a while ago and got talking about how he used to drive a LH 6cyl at the speedway years ago. (Yes I wanted to slap him at that point...)
He mentioned that when the commodores appeared on the track, they'd do good until they got a whack in the front suspension and buggered the strut, then they'd have to pull out.
MY thinking is- put a Kingswood front end in it. Then you wouldn't have to worry about the front inner guard getting bent either...
Also, my mate's boss races a VT at speedway and has very thin fibreglass panels which are screwed in over the top of the body. They're pretty flexible too, that way even if he gets a good whack, the panel can be bashed out and the fibreglass will still look straight.
On the wheel weight thing, Ute rims are thicker and stronger.

Would be interesting to find out, a lot of it would be in the parts that have already gone over the left shoulder - ABS, airbags, electrics, etc etcSurely a VB-VK would be shitloads lighter.....

Really?? Different rules to here then.
Feel free to ignore me.
Cheers.
Im not sure how its governed TBH, whether each state has different rules etc,
but I notice out bush they still run older cars, it just seems that the larger speedways have tried to keep the street stockers as more modern cars and the fender benders etc as the older car section.
It definitely sounds meaty with only a single muffler at 2.5" and dropping at about the back of the front doors:)

Liquid nitrogen works better, you just use a styrofoam cup and pour it over.
Heat worked pretty well, just a bit messier.

floor pans are clean, going to give it a coat of white 2pac
holesawing the rear sill-
still have a fair bit of the cage to weld in (taxi bar, driver door gaurds, rear legs etc.
But its getting there.
Im butting the doors on the weekend (well the 3 that need doing) as I did the drivers door the other week.
car will be all white, with minimal signage and black wheels.

I dont have the photos on this laptop of the debut night, but we had a few dramas with overheating and diff ratio was all wrong (was 3.46ish)
next two meets were rained o
ut, and we wernt able to get to one other, but we finally got back to PCR on satdy night.
changes from the first night were-
we swapped out for a set of pintara 4.11s and bumped the compression up to around 10.5:1, running around 8 degrees initial advance and a reasonably rich tune.
You can see the results in the blow ups thread! lol.
But heres some general pictures of the finished product as it stands ATM
intrusion bars, spear plate for feet etc
head spear plate
stripped doors and barwork, battery etc
removable boss, autometer basic gauges
stripped boot
fuel cell and not much else
couple holes

Its hard being up against guys in AUs with 250 EFI ford motors though, we can run a V6, but they limit the shit out of them too (president drives a falcon.... not hard to see why they have better rules on their side...)
