I picked this up a couple of months ago, it was on ebay for $3000 and I was the only bidder.
I might have paid a bit much, but it had most of the gear I wanted, 308, turbo 400, dual fuel, power steer, aluminium tray, hardly any rust etc
Plans are to tidy it up a bit, replace the LH guard, tidy the interior and have fun driving it.
The motor is a reco unit with about 45,000 km's on it, I might put this into my LX project, judging by the inlet manifold its about the right engine for an LX - anyone want to confirm this ?
It drives well but chews through the gas, I'll try to do an accurate test and then start trying to improve the economy.

Even included skid pics, good as!

Nice pick up, sounds like it has some good gear and the price is right. But I'd seriously consider putting a 253 in there and sorting out a better gas system. The carb is probably stuffed from supporting that gas elbow and it will all be out of tune etc. If you turn that 300A upside down and sit in straight ontop of a four barrel throttle-body would cost next to nothing and probably do wonders if it was tuned right.

Haha, did a fuel economy test, it managed 28 litres per 100 km;s.....about 10 mpg
I'll put some plugs and a new air filter on it and get the gas mixture set proerly.

Then I've got some 15 inch Caprice alloys, I'll fit some used 15" 4wd tyres to see if higher gearing makes a difference.

Might want to be looking at the whole spark system judging by the coil...

what is the engine no. prefix?

It is suited to points system, if you are running points with HEI then I would be switching to HEI for gas, if you are running that coil with HEI then you are probably throwing over half the available spark out the window, making the car hard to start and run rich as well as carbonising the plugs early.

yeah gas and igintion systems are a bitch
got to keep the mantiance up on it at all times else you start having problems
i got a points system here if you want to convert backwards
but then a new coil should only be about the same as postage etc

There is an easy way to test if the coil is suited to the high output of hei if you have an ohm metre, you need a coil with a primary resistance between terminals + (15) and - (1) = 0.5 - 0.7 ohms at 25degC
and
secondary between terminal - (1) and HT coil lead connection (4) = 5 - 7 Kilohms to gain the best performance, less, especially on the primary will lead to a weak spark that you will never tune out.

AFIK there are only two coils available from Bosch that suit HEI, the BEC 715 and BEC 716, both are black.

It's running HEI so sounds like I'd better have a close look at the coil.

I put the Caprice wheels on, I got some 235/75x15 tyres for the rear, they look a bit silly but its like the cars found another gear. Much quieter at highway speeds and it went further on a tank of gas than ever before.
Pics and fuel figures to follow.

The bad economy is probably due to the fact most 1 tonners had 4.44:1 dif ratio. Let me know if it is and you want to sell it.

I'm sure the diff ratio wasn't 4.44, I'm guessing about 3.55 or even 3.36.
I did a fuel economy check and its down to 22 L/100 km which is great compared to what itt was, thats without touching the engine, so maybe with a tuneup even better things are possible.

Well due to having too many cars in the driveway and too many regoes to pay, the 1 tonner is up for sale. Check it out on ebay, who knows - you might pick up a bargain !

I've gotta say that fuel economy is still horrendously bad, you should be able to get a vehicle like that to do at least 13-15 on LPG without anything exotic
