If you had to pick a car that best represents the street machining culture in Australia what would it be?

Very good topic selection.

All that's popping into my head is old white Falcons with skinny front tyres and phat rear tyres.

https://cache.gmh-to...th/FalconGT.jpg
https://cache.gmh-to...h/XYMachine.jpg

Whatever it is... it has to have:
* Some respect for originality
* Big cube pushrod V8
* An unusual aspect
* Perfected stance
* Correct 'Pro Street' tyre choice
* Ability to lift at least one front wheel off the line
* Lack of ability to pass a roadworthy test
* Loud exhaust and lumpy idle
* It's gotta be screaming out "TOUGH"

HK GTS Monaro 327 with Centerline wheels (285's on the rear with MT Steer's on the front), exhaust exiting on the passenger side before the rear tyres, full roll cage and the famous stripes...

You mean other than each and every car on this site??

Man its hard to say... I think that there are so many examples of street machining that it could really be ANYTHING...

What pops into my mind is cars like those that are in the movies running on empty and midnight spares... Theyre cars that dont have mega bucks spent on them, but are full of aussie enginuity.(sp?) I picture an LJ torry with american racer wheels, tripple carbs, a lumpy as all hell cam, big exhaust, crappy paint job hunting big V8 Falcons down parramatta road auburn.

Or a bigblock wedged into an EH, big rubber... Stock looking elsewehre... Hunting similar falcons!

Thats what's in my mind.. I know it doesnt answer the question fully but hey!

Without a doubt i would say Ron Barclay's Coral Blue HQ ute. It was the winner of Street Machime Of The Year in 1990. This car paved the way for what we see now. Best i have ever seen :spoton:

*sigh*, yeah well, I don't want to admit it but unfortunately the first thing that pops into my mind is the *cough* ....XY GT for some reason and then comes the Monaro and then the Torana.
:fool: But it should be the other way around dammit! :banghead: I've gotta get my head checked. It must be my watching "running on empty" too many times.

You have to hear it before you see it. The engine has to be louder than the exhaust, the exhaust is only made for flames. And yes it has to hunt Falcons lol

Anyone got photos of Ron Barclay's Coral Blue HQ ute. I'm guessing that's the blown thing with the gold centerred funny-car sorta wheels.

If so my mate's gotta poster of it. If not I'm not sure.

I know it's a crummydore, but Rob Beauchamp's "grape" '88 VL (350chev w/ 'Kinsler' Fuel Injection) sorta says what a tough aussie vehicle should IMO. But at the same time it's an impractical drag car.

In a way I think Tiny was sorta hitting the nail on the head when he mentioned cars without big bucks spent on them. Just like when you see a nice HJ or HX sedan something (I actually find these two cars stunningly beautiful in an ugly way if you get what I'm saying) with an '80s sorta stance and some subtle, tasteful mods.

I wish I had a photo of my mate Glenn's orange HQ ute. It's all mild. Chequerplate steel tray with black steel tube frame. Wide-ish silver powdercoated Rallye wheels and bit of a rough interior. Still smells like 'Old Holden'; that's also a must!

an HQ sedan running pizza cutters on the front and minitubbed back, black or dark red

350 chev (at least) gear drive
big solid cam
exhaust exitiing under rear passenegr door
black interior
something pokin out of the bonnet.....

i reckon what Tiny or Struggler has in their avatars sums it up pretty well.

DEFINATELY NOT BLOWN, its on the front cover of the jan-feb 1991 issue of Street Machine magazine, the car won street machine of the year as well, actually I think you will find it on the cover of several different issues of Street Machine around the same era. the number plates on the ute were "HQLDEN"

From memory the one I'm thinking of is blown. Steve, keep in mind that I was six months old when that magazine came out, so if I did see it, I don't remember it.

Yep I remember the car at the Nats... awsome.
Heath .... probably from your prospective the car dosent look anything special in the photos... but its when you see it up close (keep in mind the year it came out)... the attention detail was amazing.... one casual look and you would think... what is so special about a plain jane ute.... "Attention to Detail" is what won it many praises...in its day it was ground braking.... He didnt go for mega hp etc.. he went for "clean" and "detailed". And the fact that it won SMOTY testifys to that.
Howards Astill's "Rock 3" XA Falcon was another stand out car in its day...
