G'day! Can anybody recommend someone in SA who can do an overhaul on my XU1 Gearbox. Synchro on second has gone so I want to give the box a full look over.
Regards

I am giving you an answer because no one else has. No idea for S.A. as I am from Melb. I have no idea how handy you are but I would check the nuts on the shift levers on the r/h side of the gearbox first. Have you considered o/hauling it yourself? Bearing kits are cheap but not sure about the synchro rings. They are not a hard box to do, only thing is you might have to take the imput shaft to a workshop to have the front bearing pressed off and the new one fitted. If you have a manual, have a read.
Good luck!

there is a place on churchill road at killburn that does manuals.
Been there before for parts and the guy was pretty reasonable.
Think its called qualmann transmissions?
You'll have to check the phone book for a number and an address
hope that helps Damo

Why do you say the synchro on second is gone - and what type of box is it. The M20s and M21s have a habit of chewing the circlip on the mainshaft that holds the 1/2 synchro mechanism in place, once it gets chewed the mainshaft starts to get chewed up - can be a little pricey to rectify.

This guy is good he specialises in manual gearboxes, did my box in my GTR

Hes a old skool bloke heaps of knowledge of the old torries, this dude will talk ya ear off about the old cars

My box was completly stuffed cost me a bit but he did the lot including reconditioning the rat trap linkages

Go have a chat this this guy first, he even has a box with original 899 cluster, input shaft and third gear hanging around. really helpfull when I was looking for my XU-1 box, gave me all the numbers and what to look for etc

Cheers

Thanks for all the info, I will have a look. The only reason I assumed it was the synchro is from previous experience with another car.
Thanks again

Yep, I've dealt with this guy as well, he definately knows his stuff, he even managed to get my crusty toploader shifting nicely!
