Might sound a bit od but just seeing that most of these cars are often heavily modified for street, drift n drag would any of these gearboxes go well behind a strong v8 in a torry(200rwkw)???
Lots of sr20det drift cars....
" " s4 s5 13b gearboxes in rotary drag cars putting out big numbers.....
" " rb20det rb25det engines too!!
Obviously would need a replacement clutch but what else, as they are pritty cheap these days.
just thought i would put it out there :tease:

Everyone seems to think of t56, tko, r154 etc...

Looking for something stronger than a supra 5 speed with a overdrive or 2.

Most drag cars that ive seen use autos... Normally a powerglide with major mods...

Not sure what the manual boys run as far as drags go... I'm interested in this one too!

options is what it's all about!

Cheers

Air shifted/multi lever Lenco, Jerico andG-Force would probably be the most common for serious manually shifted cars..

6 speed Sti and R34 GTR boxes are said to be indestructible. Likewise the rb25 gear boxes and supra 6spds. The 6spd 200sx boxes are crap. A friend of mine is getting an imported Sti g/box and its costing 6grand so yeah buy what you can afford and dont thrash it i guess

You can get a 5 speed Tremek TKO 600 from Keisler in the states for $1800 brand new and they will take 600 horsepower. Lots of belhousings and clutches that fit most applications.

MySS427: I know SFA about manuals at all, but the TKO, how big is that box? Does it require a heap of work to be put behind a 308 in a LX torana?

Cheers!

I looked at the TKO because it has a good 5th ratio for cruising. But I cant find out if anyone makes a conversion to mate to the red 6. So it looks like I will have to hunt for a W58 supra. Unless of course someone can suggest something that has a bit taller first gear and a nice low 5th

Tiny: The tko is basically an updated top loader with 5th gear from what I read in a PSC mag that I read.
shanegtr:Have you emailed Dellow as they have a weird & wide variety.

No I havent, I might do that. The best thing with the TKO is it comes in either .82, .64 or .68 5th gears. .64 would make for relaxed cruising. Have a look here for more details on tremecs website

Also try Mal Wood Automotive in Warwick QLD he does lots of 5/6spd conversions, and I think he's a authorised Tremec distributor

After much reserch,iv come up with these combo...
1..Tremec TKO..$3000-3500 aust ($1800 usd shipping..comes to $3000-3500 aus)
Bellhousing..new..400-500...good strong box will take 600-800 hp (Rated 600 lb ft.
2 Supra R154..its the strongest box Toyota make Rated 450 LB fi...will handle 600 hp..cost 1500-2000 Aus,bellhousing new 400-500 aus..
3 T56..$2000-3000...second hand..rated 450 lb ft..might get lucky with bell housing second hand..$150-400 ..will take 600 Hp..but need trans tummel mods, they r big and long..
4 V160/161 (Getrag 233 as fited to BMW 850's)..6 speed Supra[s and TT nissan GTR's rated 360 lb ft(very conservatively rated) but bu all account will take 1000 hp..cost $3000-4000..bellhousing,new 400-500..
Best value seems to be the R154..very strong box,fit in with no probs..supra's dudes are pumping 600-800 hp into them...
Once again, from what iv sus,if u dont abused the box too much.Big torque and droping clutches constantly will break any box..

There is only one type of R154..they put these behind Supras turbo..theres the "w" series..like w55 w 58(strongest of the W series but no where as tough/strong as the R154)

w58 series toyota box es are good for upto the 200kw mark, the r154 are a much stronger box. the r154 is a simple design (internals), easy to rebuild, however the only one complaint you will find about the r154 is the thrust washer, shifting from 1st to 2nd and hard launches in 1st can break it, i believe a partial solution to this is to get one made up from chromolly, or similar.

the rb25det boxes are exact same internals as the rb26gtr box. strong, and probably just as strong as the r154, however i have seen some damage done caused by hard shifting. keep in mind the rb30et and rb25det boxes are the same, just different gear ratios.

i'd stick with the r154 myself, parts are readily available and cheap. for example 3rd & 4th gear clutch hub is the same as a toyota stout for f*cks sake, easy to get.

Sweet thanks for that LX SS!! Yeah i think the r154 is sounding good, getting sick of the 5500stall trimatic and want a manual again!!
So where is a good place to source a 2nd hand r154 pref in VIC???? oh and would you just go the usual route of Mal Wood Etc. for a bellhousing for a 308 trimatic block???
Any rough ideas on prices for all this????
Got 200rwkw so no w58 for me.
cheers :spoton:

i'd try the jap import wreckers, the r154 is out of the toyota supra (88-91 early shape, 2nd generation i think) with the 1jz gte, generally hard to find, expensive too, i have seen people pay 1500 for one in unknown condition then needing rebuilding. also someone who hasn't built this box before or does not have the tolerances for the internals shouldn't be let near it, i have heard and seen nasty things from badly build boxes.

depends how far you want to go.

as far as the bellhousing i wouldn't have a freaking clue, maybe try crs, they could possibly do one. however keep in mind the toyota r154 has a seperate bellhousing, so just change that, you don't have to change any part of the gearbox casing. as compared to nissan boxes etc...

this is now the part where i shut up :-P lol
