from memory , i think the dot indicates the year, ie , 1 word is armourglas, which is 10 letters, so a dot on the A will be1971 ,a dot on the M which is the 3rd letter of armourglas will be 1973 and so on, i can't remember what else is written on the glass, but it should be the same for month and date maybe, hope this helps ,cheers Rodney

This how I was told how it works The dots above armourplate indicate year of production and the other dots above safety indicate which 1/4 of the year production took place. Therfore Armourplate decoding would be A=1 R=2 M=3 O=4 etc. The 1/4 production is self expanatory starting from the S of safety. To go one step further the glass was made by Pilkington but if it is a replacement glass made for the crash repair industry/spare part the glass will read armourfloat rather than armourplate.

Hope this helps cheers Dave

There is at least 3 x numbering systems too, depending upon what piece of glass you are talking about as different words are used eg ARMOURFLOAT, ARMOURGLAS etc. I have a full explanation for HK-HG, LC-early LJ should follow this system closely, not sure about later LJ. I can type it up when I get time if needed.

Thanks all, the 2 front quarter glasses I have, have 3 dots.
First glass reads

ARMOURGLASS Dot above the R

ASRI Dot below the S

APPROVED Dot below the second P

Second glass reads

ARMOURGLASS Dot above the M

ASRI Dot below the I

APPROVED Dot below the A

So if the Armourglass means the year and the asri means the quarter, whats the approved dot for??
Yel327 that would be very helpfull when you get time.
cheers Dane

This is one of the rear door windows from my 7-74 L34.

The word ARMOURGLAS has one S to make it a ten letter word so you have one for each decade. The dot over the O signifies 1974.

The dots under the first four letters of APPROVED signify the quarter of the year. Mine is second quarter.

The last 3 letters of ASRI are the months of the quarter, making mine May 1974.

It changed at some point and LX looks like this.  Can someone decode it for us? (Antisun is the factory tint that makes it look green)

Photo of my 2/76 hatch rear window.

I guess a chance it was made Dec 75 like most other dates I have found on the car.

Pretty normal for parts industry supplied stuff (bulk of the cars - ie stuff that isn't body steel or cast parts). They were procured in bulk order contracts and supplied according to the production schedule hence why lots of stuff is made months prior to compliance. Sometimes bits will be just prior to compliance but normally 1-3 months.

So it seems like roughly the same system...

T O U G H E N E D equals the years
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 and I'd guess that no dot at all would equal zero?

Just unsure about the "Quarter" dot as the later glass abbreviates "APPROVED" to only three letters?

If Stuart's glass is December then maybe the first quarter is also represented by no dot at all?

BTW, do we know when exactly they switched suppliers from Armourglass to Pilkington?

I agree with the years you have proposed Andrew (would like to see an example of no dot to be sure).

Could the year quarters be under the ASRI and the month under the APP, would make mine Dec 75?

AFAIK Armourglass and Armourfloat are both Pilkington brand names.

~ would like to see an example of no dot to be sure ~

1980 would have to come from one of the very last UCs or a very late HZ or early WB Holden.

Would Commodores have the same branding?

~ Could the year quarters be under the ASRI and the month under the APP, would make mine Dec 75?

You could well be right. Either way, yours would be Dec '75 so we'd need to see further examples (and also know what build dates the cars they come from were).

AFAIK Armourglass and Armourfloat are both Pilkington brand names.

Okay, let me re-phrase my question...

When did the branding change? I assume there would've been a rough changeover date?

The quarter and the month are swapped around on the Pilkington branded ones. APP is the month and ASR1 is the quarter. TOUGHENED is the years. I haven't worked out when the PILKINGTON brand appeared, but it is somewhere between 5-74 and 12-75.

ANTISUN only appeared on UC as far as I can make out.

Another clue to dates is that the Australian Standards changed from ASR1 to 2080 on the 1-1-77, however it may have taken some time to get online (or maybe GMH had large stocks) as the ex Seton GMP&A hatchback has ASR1 fitted.  EDIT. I just noticed this car has ANTISUN glass.

This one. APP AS 2080 is dated 2-79.  On the 5-10-95 it changed again to AS/NZ 2080 to reflect New Zealand coming into line with Australia.

I have a complete set of LX Hatch factory tinted glass somewhere in one of my sheds (no, it isn't for sale) and while I couldn't swear to it, I *think* it says "Antisun" as well?

Anti sun is the standard aircon glass fitted to integrated AC vehicles starting in 1971 (HQ).
