I'd get some port work and oversized valves, electronic ignition etc, maybe some roller rockers to make her rev a little bit more easily?
Anything you want... Starfire Rods could help you out, a nice cam?

Harry Firth put a 161 head on a 186 for a good result but I am not too sure if the 173 will do the same job.
A 186-S in standard trim ie twin choke carby, headers, bigger valves, heavier valve springs and a slight cam gave out 145HP.
Have you thought of putting on a quadrajet carby instead of triples? Mabybe easier to tune.
Good luck on your project

How much does it cost to get bigger valves? What does it involve?
Is it machining the valve holes bigger and putting bigger valves?
My 6 has already got hardened seats, but standard valves. Will these new seats just be machined away?

What Heath said about the heads is correct.
149, 161 & 173 heads all have the same small (45.4 cc) combustion chamber (Not counting the special order, Lo-Comp versions).
179, 186 & 202 have the same large (53.5 cc) combustion chamber.
If you put a small chambered head on a 186 block you will end up with around 10:1 compression, which , as mentioned earlier is exactly what Harry Firth did in building the XU-1 motor.
By the way Phoenix, what's a 'solid crank' ?

To my knowledge, the standard port size for all red motors (except XU-1) is the same.

Smeer, I'm no engine builder but I expect you'd be getting your hardened valve seats machined out anyway (and it may actually cause some problems having the sleeve sitting in there; join problems for machining) so.
I'd say either talk to an engine builder or do the work on a standard head, get the valves way oversized and then stick sleeves in there to make them the size you want.

To make sure that is a 186-S motor, the prefix of the engine number should have 186S or 186K.
My ex HR 186S Premmy had the 186K prefix.
