Its not torry but i need the experts to come out and play

Just brought this manual 5lt VR exec saturday
Car started fine first thing this morning, went down the street, came back out to the car. It started, ran for a few seconds then just stopped
It didnt cough or splutter, theres no eng light or anything. You can crank, but no fire with the raw smell of fuel after a few seconds of cranking.
Straight away, thought dizzy, leads, coil, cap and rotor button
It has a brand new dizzy in it from a previous failure of the same kind.
Pulled the cap off and the centre button looks corroded and has broken off sitting on top of the rotor button. Replaced my cap and button.
Checked my coil for spark with a screw driver touching the pin and shorting to ground. NO SPARK
Checked ignition power supply to the coil, all good at 11.9 volts.Replaced the coil with new, still no good.

Thought maybe the earth has broken to the negative of the coil, added an earth straight from battery, still no good.

Not sure how they trigger, but if i put my multi-meter accross the neg and pos of the coil i should get a voltage on crank and and ignition yeah? i dont!!!
the plug into the dizzy has been damaged and the plastic piece had come out, pushed the plug onto the terminals from inside the dizzy( thats crank angle sensor on them yeah?)

How does the immobiliser fit into this equation. Anyone got any ideas, feel free to help

Thanks

Put a test light between the negative - on the coil and earth.
Crank the engine.
The test light should go on-off-on-off-on-off with rotation. This tells you whether the module/pick-up is working.
Coil can also cause this fault but rare.

Maybe the ignition module.

+1
Sounds like the ignition module has failed.
Had the same problem once with the WB 253. Would start ok when stone cold but once the module heated up she would stop working.

Dont i know it, spoke to Bursons. A change over module is $245 with a $200 core deposit
Brand new Bosch unit is over $600, lol

Ouch.

Thanks for the guidance, posted on another forum and have had no replies, lol

mate, try a coil first, trust me, just had the same issue. A coil is like $45, an ignition module is $600 plus. It's very easy to test. The coils are in a bad location and get hot, I'm betting the casing is cracked
If you think it's ignition module, try and get one from a mates car first just to try, takes 2 seconds to swap and try

I've had one of those change over modules from bursons, it lasted a week. When i took it back they said it was the second exchange module to fail this week.

Got my money back and picked up a second hand one for $100.

Bursons was one of the most expensive and least useful places I called when I was pricing one

My money woud be on the ignition module. From memory the ignition module is on the passengar side of the engine bay down the front. I had the same thing fail on my VR, and the auto elec reckoned it was a common problem, and he also reckoned that he had not seen very many of the hall effect sensors in the dizzy fail. I got an exchange unit from the auto elec, which from memory was only about $150 5 years ago. It took a bit to start the car after I changed the module as it had a guts full of fuel in the cylinders, but all was good.

Regards immo - if it's the fault the TDM ( theft deterrent) light will be flashing.

Regards the dissy Just test it. There are three wires. Sensor ground , sensor power (12v) & signal.
The signal is a square wave 12v. Set your multi meter to Hz (hertz) - you should have a frequency proportional to rpm.

How did you go?
