Ok after the mad full pro cross hatch hone job, the assembly begins! Man my 202 is almost ready to kick ass again, but on the water this time! It's hazelwood or bust next time we go waterskiing :P .

Here's some pics from the last few days..

Cleaned up all the ring grooves on all the pistons and fitted the new bearings, slugs 2 and 5 were a pain in the ass because they had broken rings when they were removed, the carbon deposits had built up inside the ring grooves too, took a while

Who paints a flywheel seriously?! Hehe this ones on show lol, well you can kind of see it so thought it would be best to paint it in a nice clean black engine enamel.

Since the dog clutch was on the font of the crank, we had to dial in the cam first and then drop in the crank after and then check with a dial gauge, a bit of an ass about way of doing it but it worked ok, since I'm running the straight cut gears it is possible to do it this way but with the helical cut gears I think you would struggle, the dog clutch would have had to come off and be put back on after the timing was done.

Had the incorrect rocker studs so I chased some up from super pro in Dandy, very friendly and helpful there, I'd never been. But yea sorted that out and bolted up the valvetrain. Cleaned up the sideplates off the 186 too they came up alright. Also in between here I gave the block a lick of jam, looks good as chevy orange always does!!

Mad scoop! It's pretty funny how keen I am to see the scoop poking out the engine cover, hell yea!
Posted Image
Posted Image

When the dollar was at it's highest I was able to score a set of comp sbc roller rockers really cheap from the US. They seem like good equipment, it's a mild setup for what they could handle anyway, either way I've got 4 spares haha!

Next will be the sump, and drilling a hole in the dog clutch for the locking pin. Then the mounts can be bolted up and it's pretty much ready to drop in!

After i put the nitrous on it lol.

Cheers.

Hahaha yea bomber I had been thinking about a scoop for ages but when I saw yours the decision had then been made for me, I had to have one! and the straight cuts are there to compliment it!

cheers guys, just put a new kit through the jabsco water pump and have almost finished drilling the hole for the locking pin, which is proving a pain in the ass! ill get some pics up soon

Mate if yourse is anything like mine you will notice a large improvement getting the intake out of that hot engine cover, so the scoop not only looks awesome but serves a purpose......Best of both worlds.

Now please tell me your running a flame arrestor inside it not a filter??

Cheers.

Yep, agreed, scoops are sick!

Hmm, tell me more about this flame arrestor device?

the 186 just had some gauze in a chrome air filter housing. Is that a flame arrestor? Should I not be using the air filter element? My paranoia kicks in with a fresh donk that I didn't want shit getting in but i did hear its not necessary to run a full filter in marine applications.

Um yeah it looks just like a small filter, but its just got a steel mesh around it, no actual element as such.

Stops flames blowing out upon back fire, but doesnt restrict air flow.

dont know anyone running an air filter as such on a boat. I see you put the foam gauze in the front of your scoop like i did, i recon that will be fine for stopping large bits of crap, birds and small children from getting sucked through

hey brad
If you can use the air filter do it, its not so bad now our lakes are finally full here in vic but last few years we had dust bowls and with a scoop
out the engine cover there is nothing stoppin the dust gettin blown straight in, if i could put pics up id put pic's of our woody
with sbc that is bit sore from a lot of dust (and some nitrous might not of helped) but if you can keep the filter, OR minimum the flame arestor!!fire and boats dont mix!
Where do you normally head?

That's sick,
Well anywhere across Vic, Hazelwood, should be hitting up eildon soon.

Geez The couple of days leading up to Hazelwood, had a few issues regarding the dog clutch!
I had been supplied with a dog to suit 'Rolco' dog clutches, I didn't know there was a difference and when We went to mount the 'tawco' dog clutch housing to the 202, the dog was too long, and hence the housing wouldnt mate up to the block!

Since it was an interference fit, it wouldn't be easy to remove especially taking car in not stuffing the front of the crank. So with some help and an angle grinder and a big puller we cut down a portion of it and pulled it off and I went to tawco in Baysy and they were extremely helpful there, however I was again sold the wrong dog! This one was machined slightly undersize, to suit a re-machined crank snout incase you round it off. So after finally getting a dog that measured up we heated it up and belted it on with the engine sitting upright. All gravy!

Got to hazelwood and the thing was pissing out oil and fuel, the fuel was coming out the glass bowl gasket, so I brought a spare pump and so we fitted that, then the front of the sump gasket had fallen out causing a leak, tipped it up to stop the flow of oil, degreased the surfaces good and got out some gasket blue, a little ghetto but it sealed up nicely and we got it out onto the water.

Fired up nicely but then cooked up quite quickly, found out that there was no water getting through the block, wtf, I'd just put a kit through the pump, hehe turned out I had just put the hoses on the wrong way! Finally fired it again and it was ready to rock.

She hammers along nicely. Checking against a malibu, she does about 42mph with 4 people in it. Fun was cut short when the battery eventually died, the alternator wasn't charging, so that was my next step anyway, to fix up all of the main wire feeds and fit another alternator with an internal regulator. Also fitting a new head unit to finally get some half decent tunes going!

Here is a photo I took from Hazelwood, was the only one because Sunday was sposed to be the photoshoot but a) battery no chargy b)it was raining and pretty average weather, should get some shots maybe at Eildon!

Fingers crossed for the weather too. I think just at the national park, hehe I'll have to double check that, are you close to Eildon??

Yeah, it will be fine, worst case bring the tools and the parts and we will do it in the camp ground.

Two years ago we did a head gasket on martys in the camp so whatever yours needs will be easy compared to that.

How's it all going? Did the deadline get met? We just got our social 202 boat running an will be at Glenmaggie over the summer break... I just live around the corner from Clive and I think he's done about six cams for our 202 boats over the last few years so due to me beeing the test mule for a while he probably now knows what works for that job :)
