Hey guys.

Can't figure out if it's a something metallic and light rattling or pinging.
Nothing has changed on the car, but at idle and low revs I have the classic pinging sound (Tinny rapid tinkle sound - almost sounds like a screw rattling around on top of say your air filter with the engine running - Actually the speed of it varies occasionally, speeds up and slows down quickly almost disappears and then comes back  ).

As soon as you bring the revs around 1500 it disappears completely and doesn't show it's ugly head again.

Here's the thing I don't get - nothing has changed on the engine (except I considered maybe it's the ULP instead of PULP for last few weeks since wallet is in for repairs) and it's not always there.
By not always there I mean - Let the engine cool down for awhile (say an hour or two) and start it up and I didn't notice it, as soon as I drove the next time I stopped I noticed it was back again.

As far as I can tell it sounds like the very front, but get underneath to hear if it's a loose exhaust bracket and it sounds like the back.

Temperature's are fine.
Going to put PULP in it when the ULP runs out on this tank and see if it makes any difference.

Would ULP or crap fuel cause pinging? or pinging to suddenly start occuring out of "nowhere"? Or could it be too rich/lean a mixture at the carby? Timing gone out?

Cheers

- J.

not at idle it wouldn't..I think you are looking for something hitting somewhere..loose inspection cover on flywheel, clamp on a rocker cover, fan touching a shroud ect ect.

Take your fan belt off and run it for a minute or two, keep your eye on the temp guage though. This will diagnose alternator, waterpump and fan belt itself.

Exhaust hitting somewhere, mine does it too. Too lazy to find it, and only does it on cold idle. Look for shiny spots on the exhaust.

I thought of that - My drivers side extractor likes to make a rather annoying knock on the swaybar, both the knock and this tinny empty-spray can rattle is present over the top of that.

Had another quick listen on my lunch stop and I have a feeling rodomo is right and it's the alternator.

A heap of things to try there anyways. Have bit of a fiddle, and I'm sure you'll locate it.

Ok, Rodomo wins a cookie.
It's my alternator making the strangest noise for the strangest reason!
Actually, I have no idea why it's doing it.

After discovering it was the alternator - and being able to hear the noise very softly spinning the blades by hand I whacked it all back together, fire it back up and the noise is still there. My old man walks up to see what I'm up to and shoves a piece of 2x4 between the alternator and chassis lip and it disappears instantly
Alternator isn't actually touching anything though, so I think the plank between chassis lip and the alternator was just preventing the alternator from vibrating with the motor and thus stopping the inside rattle.... I think!

Either way, it's not a "death rattle of danger" but sure is embarassing having all these non-threatening knocks and tinkle rattling sounds that sound like a block on the verge of implosion :<_<:

Update: Not satisfied with the annoying sound I went back out.
Took a closer inspection, checked all bolts and so on.
Fired it up - still there but was alot more intermittant - Finally it sped up rapidly and then with a relatively loud "ting" it went quiet (sounded like a bolt vibrating then falling out while hitting something moving on the way out).

Confused, I turned it off and started looking everywhere for something that had fallen out. Turned it back on and it was there again, but instead was a consistent and louder "ting" sound, eventually it went out with one last loud one and it stopped completely O.o

I'm leaning towards a bearing inside the alternator may have gotten stuck/flat spot?

Alternator is sounding a little sick, I would be replacing it. The other thign is if a bearing is going having a fan belt that is tight tight will increase the alternator destroying itself.

Cheers

Think from memory they have a little wave washer that sits behind the bearing at the brush end, anyway its well worth pulling apart sooooooon because if its the bearings they will spin and flog out the housing if it hasn't done already, not a hard job and you can get the bearings for a couple of bucks. Good luck Jim.
