Hi,

Just after some opinions on the power limit of a T5.

Assuming it is treated well. i.e no clutch kicking, no hard flat shifting, 90% driven on the street.

I will be running one behind a modified supercharged V6 will make a maximum power of ~240rwKw=321rwHp.

With a drive line loss of 25% that's ~320fwKw=430fwHp.

Not sure on torque figure but it will be substantial.

So who's running what in front of there T5's?

What clutch and flywheel setups are you running?

I have been told that the earlier T5's (non world class) are better as they have brass syncros, can anyone confirm this?

Thanks Youngy

Many years ago Rob Vickery ran about 1000hp through one at the summernats dyno comp (TT holden in a VR/VSute). He was able to drive away afterwards. Thats a reasonable testament to their strength.

Good to know. Any idea on what clutch/flywheel he is using.

I have billet flywheel from NPC, it has provisions to run a 10.5" clutch over the standard 10"(i think) and tossing up wether to spend the extra $450ish on a 10.5" clutch or run the HD one I have now.

The 10.5" clutch is based off a XR6 turbo clutch kit im lead to believe

providing its in good working order and your nice to it I reckon you'll be fine, I have seen them behind 304's and being thrashed and still surviving, although the one I drove myself felt rather sloppy after its 240,000kms of abuse haha. its definatly not the best choice but for the cost of 6 T5's you could get one new TKO

Yeah well that's right. I think I would rather go through a couple before making the step to TKO etc. Probably cost close to 4-5K for a conversion.

In the old days a 253 clutch was 240mm
A 308 was 255
And nowdays Exedy doesn't do either of those
They step straight to the Chev pressure plate at 263mm

All bolt to the same flywheel

If you start breaking them or like im doing, tearing the case hardening off the input and cluster gears, you can get a gear set from Astro Performance or G Force that will handle up to 600 HP.

Around 2k and it all bolts into your T5 case

Shaun, thanks for sharing. I wasn't aware of those upgrade gear kits!

What are you running in front of your T5?

Shaun, I've heard of straight cut gearsets being put into T5s, is that what the kit you're talking about is?

G Force USA

I don't think they are straight cut, the gears are made from a stronger alloy and have 1/8" more contact(i.e wider)

G force makes strait cuts AFAIK but there about 5k for the kit

Note thats what i got told by the mate who's running the T5 in the blown Torry....So dont hold me to it but he did do a bit of research.

Cheers.

Bomber what do you make of the following link

Astro Gears

The images look similar to the g force gears.

Only $1400

The HD fine spline input is another $375

Approx $2k total shipped to aus, then the cost of someone rebuilding the box if you don't want to do it yourself plus new clutch plate to suit the fine spline input shaft.

Not much change out of $3k

The
G Force:
"G-Force Gears utilize 9310 High Nickel Steel"

Mustang Shop Link:
"The "Super T-5" Gear Kit is constructed of 9310 Alloy Steel"

Interesting....

Those astro gears are definitely the right price.

Im prolly the wrong person to ask?? Im just chiming in when i know an answer lol, but havnt used any of this stuff so not overly confident in answering?

I never looked at T5's much because as you say, by the time you get all that gear and get it fitted your looking at 3k plus, if you shop carefully you could get a TKO in the car for not much more than that.

Realistically though i recon for your application a stocky would be fine surely??

Cheers.

They ise T5's in the saloon cars and they cop a belting
However they run the PPG straight cut hardened gearsets

Haha mate, any input it good :)

Yeah I recon I will be fine, just doing some research that's all. The cars not even flared etc.

As I really want to stay away from auto at all costs,(well sort of lol)

Very Rough TKO figures

TKO box $2.5-3k
New tail shaft $500
Hyd. clutch setup ??
Different clutch plate $200
Speedo problems...

I'm just happy that there is stronger options for the T5.

Shouldn't straight cut gears be cheaper than helicals? :blink2:

Shaun, thanks for sharing. I wasn't aware of those upgrade gear kits!

What are you running in front of your T5?

Its behind a 355 puting out around 450hp and 440 torque.

Last T5 only lasted 3 hard accerloration runs through 1st,2nd 3rd and now makes a horrible whine in those gears.
The box before that lasted a bit longer but was making the same noise and when I pulled it down the input shaft and cluster gear had stripped the case hardening off.

Im running 3.0 diff and 275/40/17 tyres with no wheel spin in 2nd so the poor box is taking full torque lol

Astro Performance has a guy in Aus and is trying to get Mal Woods to stock there product.
This is the email I received back when I inquired about about a kit from there aus suppier.

kit includes Main shaft, Input shaft, Gear set 1st 2nd 3rd, and cluster, billet cluster support
As you can see the quote also contains a rebuild kit

[email protected]

G'day Shaun,
I'll be able to supply the kit that you're asking about with a bearing/synchro/seal rebuild kit for $2600 including gst, plus postage if you're not in WA. Let me know if you don't want the rebuild kit.
Which state are you in? Was putting the e-series t5 behind the 355 straight forward, or was it a bit of work? What's the best time you've had it down the quarter and what car is it in?
Chad

Im only running 225 tyre's and should make less power. I also will be running a 3.45 diff ratio which should be a little kinder on the T5.

So are you going to get the astro kit if the current T5 fails?

What clutch setup do you currently have ?

Ive been pricing both the T5 upgrade and a TKO.
The TKO with toploader length input shaft to suit my bell housing is $3300 from Mal Woods or $2300 from the USA with out freight.

Im leaning towards the T5 upgrade as the only mod needed to fit it to my car is a clutch plate, all the upgrade kits use a 26 spline input shaft where as any aussie T5 has a 10 spline input.

The box is still in the car driving but noisey lol

this is the clutch I run with no problems
