Check 76lxhatch's build 'SS hatch' on page 2 as he's done this on his hatchback from memory

Yep, this was a silver bullet for me, because the Commodore driveshaft has a proper CV centre joint so its angle doesn't matter. Allows the front and rear uni joints to be on correct cancelling angles when that would be impossible with a one piece shaft, no more vibrations!

What happened to work well for me was using the standard length VN rear shaft, and shortening the front only. I made a mount for the bearing which is welded forward to the safety loop, this holds most of the weight and is stabilised by a couple of rivet nuts through the tunnel immediately above it. Requires a second safety loop for the rear shaft which is very tight but do-able.

I have a UC parts car with a factory two piece driveshaft here but I've never got around to getting under it to take a good look. I think it has a cardan centre joint so not as useful.

Yes
Ford clutch plate
Holden pressure plate
Mine is the current setup. Give CRS a call they can give you the size of both

Thanks Mike.

Thanks 76lxhatch.

I will use 2 piece shaft.

I had a look under and my UC must have had a 2 piece as it had the tunnel mounts for the uni joint.

I made up a bigger plate for the uni joint and it will bolt up no problem.

I got drive shaft balancing services to shorten the bottom end of the shaft by about 20 mm and got them to replace the Uni joint as it was stuffed.

Fitted it up today. Just need to paint it up.

Nice, that made it simple. Looks like you have quite a bit of room for safety loops too.

If you haven't set your uni angles yet you may want to build in some extra room for adjustment at the centre joint, obviously you can shim it down but maybe leave a little room to go up also?

Yeah. Done that.

I am a little behind on my posts and pictures. Worked a treat.

Are the safety loops more for high horsepower applications 500+?

We have to put them in as soon as the diff is replaced with something non-standard, or the engine output increases more than 30% (so pretty much on any modified car). The stupid part of the rule is that the CV joint counts so a second loop is required (even on something like a Commodore where its factory).

Would have thought your rules would be at least as difficult?

A lot of events call for tail shaft loop. Some half some full, depends on event.

Coming along nice by the way

OK all,

Let there be light!

Fitted an original wiring harness LX (i think) but has floor high beam dipper switch. Could be LH.

Anyway I cant get all the dash lights to work. I have tested all globes and connections.

The Battery and high beam lights appear but that's it. I have turned up the dash light dimmer switch but no joy.

Could the dimmer switch be faulty and how do i test before i buy a new one?

Well you just need to locate the appropriate terminals and run a ohmeter on it as you adjust the knob? Or you could bypass the potentiometer and see if it works. Obviously make sure the lights circuit has a working earth too.

Flared LX hatchbacks with nice yellowy round headlights glowing give me a hard on hehehe

Thanks. I will give that a try.

I might keep the foot dipper for something different as my first hatch had one .

Hi All,

Bit of an undate on the engineering. Costs adding up!

The drivers side exhaust header was exiting on a bad angle so had to remove the header and refabricate the exit point higher. This now allows me to fit front sway bar now.

Decided to get full mandrel bent exhaust system. Running VE cat 2 inch to exhaust and 2 and a half after. twin system. Have to meet VN motor emissions.

Was having bump steer issues with the HQ callipers and stubs so notched out the upper control arm. I also added a A9X style steel bump plate to the lower control arm.

Seats are a no go because of the deleted head rest so I have swapped them out. All going well should have the sign off next week. Will get picks of the work soon.

5 gas emotions and noise tests passed! I was worried as 304 motor with 600 Holley. All good. VN block.
