Tacho can be tested with a budget 12v battery charger.
It will produce 6000pulses/min. For a v8 should read 1500rpm
Disconnect tacho wire to coil and reconnect to +ve of charger, connect -ve of charger to earth, switch on ignition.

as i remember the old autometers didnt have a switch they had wires that you cut or left for certain cyl engines

Boofhead here,,,, worked it out, the switch is hidden inside. Went right and the revs increased so I clicked it to the left and all is sweet. Now worked out when I thought I was doing 5,000 rpm it was only doing 3800 rpm.
