One of the hardest decisions in any new car project is wheels. I hate modern bling bling 20" wheels, especially on a classic like an LX Hatch. Love to hear peoples opinions and options on wheels. After a much heated debate about better brakes and not hitting immovable objects (wanted 15" for style) its been agreed to use 17" rims.

Car is Jasmine Yellow with A9X blackouts.
Tyres will be 335/35/17 on 12" rims for the rear, and 255/45/17 on 9" rims for the front.
Happy to hear options and opinions.

Something like Simmons FR17's really suit the Torana and look kinda period correct... They have the style of the 70s/80's...

Or there are those 17" GTS/Sprintmaster knock offs... I use to like them, but not so much any more...

I think there was a mob looking to create 17" hotwires... But I'm not a fan of 15" hotwires... So a big no from me! hahaha

Simmons V5s :)

or ROH Chicanes done up the same way are not bad if you want something similar but not so pricey, and still a lightweight 3 piece wheel

Plenty of 2 piece wheels over here, maybe something sorta "spokey" looking? I deal in wheel components alot and was really up in the air what I was going to use on my car, until I saw the road race ones I am using..soon as I saw them I knew they were the perfect combo of style and not too modern looking (which I didn't really want in this case) and large enough to clear my brakes as well.

Just look around online in general maybe, as there is lots of stuff available. If the place can't get the wider outers you want...could always just buy what ever width they do and just have the outers swapped as well. (assuming you are using 2 piece wheels)

I agree with Matt on the FR's, awsome on a Hatch. Been through all of this recently with mine, wanting a bigger brake package, but plenty of the wheels dont give you much clearance because of the shape of the inner half of the band. eg, you need a 17" ROH Venturo to go over the hoppers 290 kit for a torana.

I've stuck with the 15"GTS or Pontiac wheel and have VT front discs (296mm) and R32 skyline calipers, AP5200's would be a nicer, easier, less effort fit. How much brake are you after?

I agree with most of what has been said, I prefer period correct wheels too
Simmons would be my first choice if I had the money, anything period correct would be good and somewhere in the 15 to 17 in size, I have not driven a Torana with 17" and know that from my own car that to get Toranas to handle means stiff springs; stiff springs and low profile tires and are not going to make for a nice ride.

Sorry Jeff but the only thing I dislike about your car is the wheels, they just look to modern for my taste

That's ok.....I need something at least 18" to clear my brakes and these kinda grabbed me. Nice thing about wheels is how easy they are to change too though.

I have seen some 3 piece wheels I have liked too....maybe will get another set to swap back and forth some day ?

The added difficulty with finding a contender is offset and width. A set of magnesium rims for the track are no problem but a set for the street is difficult. Considered the FR17 as its the only style availiable new in the sizes. However the issue is Tempe who consider the customer is only a customer until they have paid their money. No business should expect return customers when an issue develops and they can't return phone calls ,emails or respond to customer that has spent $5k only 3mths earlier. Was thinking some Compromotives but production is halted. Now looking at some BBS for offset and size, styles. Frustration on options might just get the better of me in the end.:Headbang2:

Do ROH still make 3 piece wheels like the old Simmons? Something like the Chicanes with the right colour painted centre would look good and be available in whatever offset you like, also nice and light weight

ROH only do the one pattern in 17" modular (venturo? sp). The unfortunate facts of life are that even 17's are getting deleted and made obsolete as the big push toward horse and cart sized wheels continues. Complicating things are 12" width and need for deep dish offset and 4.75 (120.65) PCD.

Todays aftermarket wheels are throw on the lowest lacky-band rubber on cart sized wheels use a heap of chrome/gold bling and a psychedelic pattern. Then you put them on your overweight dunndore while playing doof doof music and go to work picking up passengers. LOL How boring are cars today ..... Bland Bland and Bland.

Bugger... perhaps worth looking for some second hand wheels to get the centres though if the bands/rim halves are still available...?

I know exactly what you mean about current aftermarket wheels, its amazing how often I find myself looking at a car in a magazine and thinking "that could be nice, pity about the wheels"

Wheels are such a big part of the look of a car that its easy to ruin the whole thing IMO. What worries me is with the lack of offerings is its far too easy to regret your choice and then spend the rest of the time hating yourself (every time you look at the car). Of course its all in the eye of the beholder but like a squeek or rattle still very annoying.

Have a look through the Budnik wheels as well..being a 2 piece wheel, it's easy to get different offsets and 17" outers are still easy enough to get (we usually keep a few in stock there even) or some of the other billet wheel makers out there.. I think using a 'standard' outer instead of a 'soft lip' style help with the more vintage style look as well..Budnik still does a few of the standard outer designs too..
Alot of thier are modern, but a few of them are somewhat retro looking and pretty nice in person as well.

Boze wheels do some nice looking stuff as well!

Intro's westcoast

paint the "insert" black like gts wheels. They are custome wheels so any offset or BS. To me they look like the love child of a GTS/FR. It will be what I am getting..... one day

Thanks guys for the suggestions. So much available but mostly not in size/styling/offset etc. Can spend hours looking for style suitability possibilities only to find your fitting criteria is not available.

Jeff did the 315's fill your guards ok? How was your clearance? I will get some Pirelli 355's to you and I am sure you will love the look of them under the blunt end. Just a shame its not a width option in a 17 or 18.

Here is the neatest way for a chassis mod to fit the 355s however I would go that extra bit and mildly curve the modification to inner wheelwell rather than the square corner in the photo. Then you just adjust the chassis deviation to suit.
