The lastest street machine has a write up on the speed trials in SA. One of the guys is running a 292ci chev 6 in his LJ torana. There was a small photo of the engine bay and the engine looked very similar to the standard holden 6 (I reckon the average cop would not be able to tell the diff :D ). Does anyone know where you could get some info on these engines? Availability of engines and parts? Looks like the fit was pretty good in the LJ, but it was a small pic so hard to tell.

Most of them come from trucks. You can get them through importers, but be prepared to pay $1500 for a rebuilder.

Cheers

PS: There is a lot of mucking around in getting one into a holden.

A mate of mine had a import VH commodore badged as a chevy with VK bumpers and grill from factory.. It had the 292 six and it looks like a holden six on roids..Another thing it had different was a Steering box instead of the usual rack & Pinnion. The thing wasnt a fast car but it had enormous amounts of torque..Could do a brake burnout all day long at 3000rpm it top gear..with a bit of work like cam/carb/extractors i reckon it woulda been an absolute animal..

As for fitting them in a holden if they fit this commodore easy i dont see why it would be hard to fit it in a LJ, sounds like engine mounts and sump is all thats needed.

put one in with tripples and get a sticker made up for the rocker cover that says "4800 XU-1" instead of "3300 XU-1" that would leave a few people scratching their heads!

A work colleague had one in a UC with a Duggan alloy head and 600 Holley. The whole carb hung out the bonnet !!!! It went really well though.....after we got a balancer that would stay put and welded the flexplate bolts to the flexplate to stop them coming loose. As someone mentioned earlier, REAL torquey.

They were in local bedford trucks. The easiest way to spot one is the height of the side plates.

thats the original pic I was talking about. Be hard to spot the diff between a holden red and that to the untrained eye. Looks a bit longer and taller, fits in allright thou

I had a Chev C20 pick up with the 292 6 cyl, very torqy as said earlier, not a revver at all. But a bloody great motor in the truck, it ran on lpg and never had a drama with it. Just like the ever reliable holden 6, only bigger!!!. We towed a 19' ski boat , with a glide on camper 4 berth in the C20, and we could sit on 110kph without a problem, loved the hills, just used some of that massive torque. Nothing but praise for that motor, dont know how it would adapt in a sedan .

That would be interesting. One of those in a LJ with EFI and a big snail hanging off the side would be perfect.
