as the title says the gilmer belt keeps jumping off. i've tried having the belt really really tight, loose, in between. if i give it curry she jumps off.

i noticed the alternator is sitting on a slight angle and i've tried everything to fix it (washers etc) and it still goes back to being on a angle and on the water pump it runs right on the back of the pully and as the revs get higher the belt moves quiet a bit on the pully. upto 15mm prob.

ive hurd with these if you are on and off the gas they will spit the belt but im not. did it twice on the weekend just giving it to the end of the street and back.

quiet dangerous as the motor heats up real quick when it does spit it.

HELP :wtf:

sounds like an alignment fault for sure,i think you should be able to twist the belt 90 deg to itself
when tensioned correctly, bloke up here had one driving the pump on mech.injected ecotec, was on
a stocky and never jumped off

As above. You need to persist with getting everything lined up or your problem will not go away. I used to have one on the hatch and it was fine.

If only there was some kind of belt that was cheap, compact, quiet and tolerant of misalignment...

What...like a V belt ?

Piss it off and go back to a V belt mate
Check the bottom pulley for wear too...as they tend to wear fast if they are shit procomp alloy and this causes belts to slip too too

But yes your main issue sounds like poor alignment

no worries cheers fella's. i was actually thinking of going back to the original pulley/belt system. if it damages this new belt after i sort out the alignment its going on ebay!!

As said, theres only one tried and true method to fix a gilmer belt setup.

Step one, remove all the gilmer belt components,

Step two, refit all the v belt components,

Step three, fit a v belt.

Cheers.

Chris..it's got to be alignment is your problem..or youre running a "early" water pump Gilmer kit on a late model(long nose) one

and dont have the belt really tight..that'll just chew out the water pump bearings in no time..they are supposed to run "just" tight..snug

That belt is moving around a lot, but I think you can trace it to the alternator being out of whack.

Don't listen to the gilmer haters just yet!

Looks like you have the wrong pulley for the water pump.

I think you got 2 problems there. Firstly obviously the alignment of the alternator then the top pulley, shouldnt be sitting that far out, cant see behind the belt but it looks like that pulley needs to come in around 1/2 an inch or so. Looks good though mate, will be getting a set myself once I source some decent thermo's.

i've always thought it looked like the pulley or water pump is wrong just by the fact its a fanny hair from the trans cooler. might see how much a new water pump is and see if the pully will fit it?

Chris..i reckon you have the correct water pump for that motor(long nose)..so the kit is probably wrong(for early red motor)

the top pulley should sit closer to the pump housing..how ever you may have some success spacing the alternator bracket a little?

So I put washers under the bracket and went for a drive and cos the belts been coming off and putting slight cuts in it she snapped the belt. But it was going fine just driving normal but the sec I booted it bang it snapped. Really getting the shits with this thing it's gonna crack the head or break something soon.

Na mate I didn't buy it. It was on the motor when I bought it. I've got my brothers wedding on the 28th so I've gotta get it running but if it keeps playing up its gotta go. Can't risk spitting the belt when I'm out n about.

Measure the difference between your water pump and the shorter version. If that will bring the water pump pulley back in line with the rest it will look a lot better and will help keep the belt on track. Then you can have another go at shimming the alternator if required.

Is it a factory alternator bracket or rare spare one that could cause an alignment problem
