Iam rebuilding a LX 76 Torana, Iam having trouble looking for Steering knuckle cotter Pins.
If any one knows where I can get them from please email me.
Iam in darwin N.T. , the only place I have found is American Auto Parts, they have them for $17 ea.

Rare Spares can supply them too.

They are expensive no matter where you get them.

If you go to the wrecker you may get some good ones.

But be warned, they are a bastard to remove.

Dont forget to fit nylock nuts.

Cheers

this will sound silly, but have you tried a bicycle store? they would have cotter pins for bike cranks and they look like they are a similar size, if I was at home I could check the size for you, but I wont be there for a few days

I saw a few on eBay in the last few days, not sure if they are still there or not and I can't remember what price they were fetching but it's worth a look.

If you are fitting nylock nuts then why or how do you use cotter pins seeing they are designed for castlated nuts not nylocks...?

Have a look at auto stores or bicycle stores like makka suggested. The other places might be mechanics shops etc.

Cheers

PS: My parts supplier just through me some... I might have some left over... what size do you need???

OLDn64.

Maybe I have the terminology wrong.

The original nuts may have the end deformed to act as an interferance fit on the cotter pin thread.

The nylock nut uses a similair principle where the nylon ring pressed into the end also acts as an interferance fit on the cotter pin thread.

I am just worried that a normal nut may be installed and the unspeakable happens down the track.

I don't know if the push bike cotter pin has the same durability/hardness as the OE.

Bike cotter pin failure = Sore nuts.
Torana steering cotter pin failure = OMFG.

Cheers

This is off the Rares Spares site. Looks like a pair is $39.22 and $20.43 each. Do yourself a favour and get the proper pins. Rares also sell the uni-joint.

Thanks for the advice. I managed to get some from the Wreckers, but they require new nuts. My next option is to go to www.americanautos.com.au. 17.77 ea.

Hi Guys

After looking closely at the photo's of the s/h cotter pins available on eBay I know for a fact I would not bother with those and deal directly with Rare Spares or whoever sells brand new ones.
A safety aspect.....

I realise the ebay items were not being overly considered in this thread.

I dont think I would be replacing them with bicycle ones either, albeit a long time ago I seem to recall the bicycle ones actually bending... Something I would not like to have in my steering component.

Cheers

Torana05 who posts here typically has them for sale on ebay, he could be a good source.
Anyway, how to get them out........advice of using a brick is okay for all but the ones down lowest, the engine mount and engine make it physcially impossible to put a brick in here. If you're also in the same predicament as myself(cant get a good swing at that pin (ive got a lpg convertor hanging over mine), join my push to get rares to make the removal tool, I think it would be kinder to the pins too.

G'day Guys - it is a terminology thing for sure.

I thought Castled nuts had split pins?????

Those split pins are also known as cotter pins - hence OLDN's statement above as well.
