I am not sure if this is the right place for this but here they are.
While looking for HQ's on the trains I came across these pictures and thought I would share them here.
Something I was interested to see is that a couple have Jelly Beans mags on them.
Cheers Paul.

Where are these pictures taken? From the factory heading interstate?

All the cars look new... Interesting to see at least two had the 5 slot ROH mags on them.

Hope they were discounted at the dealers, as they would of put some K's up on that train trip :driving:
On a serious note, i guess they do the same with the New VE Dores etc, put them on the trains as well

My guess, based on VR (Victorian Railways) wagons and the fact Paul lives in Perth these are being shipped from Dandenong to WA. There was a rail head at the Dandenong plant.
Great pics.

There was a time when if you wanted to travel interstate you didn't have to drive there, you could load your car onto a train and get to drive it at your destination. I believe you travelled on the same train on the leading carriages.

It looks like mostly the Torana pics were taken at places called South Dynon and Canal yard ??.
Were they were going I have no idea.
The pictures were taken to show the types of rail wagons and fortunaly for us the happened to have Holdens on them.
I found one picture with the front of a HQ showing out of a covered wagon and thats it so far.
I have also posted more pictures on mysandman . com here
http://www.mysandman...ns-on-the-train
Now I just need to find the HQ pictures I am looking for.
Cheers Paul.

They got rid of it here in Sydney, I can't remember the last time I saw passenger cars on trains.

South Dynon Freight Terminal was alongside Dynon Road, West of Melb, think its dissappeared under a container terminal now. Never heard of "Canal Yard" but this could be a small part of the Tottenham freight Terminal which is hugh.
BTW I have my car booked on the Indian Pacific out of Adelaide this Oct to go to the Monaro Nationals in WA. Several Monaros are also booked. We will all drive home. The Ghan also offers this.

We also lost a large train yard by the docks - Darling Harbour, now a tourist mecca.

Thanks for this information Norm, at least I can place some of those pictures now.
I may also be able to search for other pictures from there and see what else comes up.
Cheers Paul.

as a train nerd i remember catching the bus home from school in 1984 and seeing a whole train of the first xf falcons to come into nsw waiting in campbelltown yard.funny none of them would exist now shitboxes they were.this sparked much teasing aimed at those of the blue genre as even at age 14 we knew they were nothing cars.

Hi, I worked at South Dynon from 87 to 92 as a Diesel Maintainer. South Dynon is a locomotive maintenance depot and I can’t see any features, building etc that show the photos being taken at Dynon. The standard gauge rail would have passed nearby but it is doubtful a train would stop at Dynon. I would say that the photos are probably at the Dandenong Plant rail yards or the old rail yards at North Melbourne between North Melbourne and Spencer Street.

There are a lot of tracks in the photos and between North Melbourne and Spencer Street was a place called the hump. This is where they sorted all the carriages/wagons into particular train consignments. A bit off topic but the hump was a small hill in the tracks that were remotely controlled, the wagons would come up the hump and from there the tracks would switch electronically at the points and the wagon would join onto the consigned train. A special class of diesel loco (H class) would shunt the wagons. This would make a bit of sense, a full train would come from Dandenong, then go to the Melb yards (hump) and be added onto trains going to different destinations, both interstate and intrastate. I hope this hasn't bored anyone; I love Toranas but also loved the Railways.

Thanks for posting theses nostalgic photos, I have sent a copy to my elderly Dad who spent 52 years working on the Railways in Victoria.
