Hey guys, finally have got my 253 in and was starting to tune it when I noticed milky oil dripping from the front sump seal. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to where I should start looking? Ie how the water may be getting into the oil?

Timing case cover or inlet manifold corrosion or head gasket incorrectly fitted or torqued.
Worse case scenario would be cracked cylinder head or block.

Did you fit the manifold and or timing case cover?
Do you remember any corrosion at the water jackets?

Just double checking, is this milky oil showing on the dip stick?

Yeah the milky oil is showing on the dipstick, I didn't notice any corrosion around the front cover or manifold, I rebuilt the engine and didn't see anything, all bolts are torqued to spec, and the block looked fine, I'm trying to cover all bases first because I don't wanna pull the engine back out just yet

compression test it...to rule out the head gasket....

I'm going to do a pressure test on the radiator to see if manifold is leaking but I would need to take it into a workshop to get a compression test done, just looking for things I can do at home first

unless your mech works for beer :)

Really, didn't know u could buy the compression testers that cheap! I'm hoping it's either gasket or head, I'm praying it's not the block..

Could be leaking where the inlet manifold mates up to the heads.
Did you have the block decked?
Did you have the inlet manifold machined to suit?

No the block wasn't decked and it's a brand new inlet manifold so I haven't had it machined. Everything seemed to marry up fine when it was installed, had a mechanic build the engine with me

Thanks, much cheaper then I'd thought! Any idea what sort of reading I should be getting?

depends on the engine specs but as long as they are all about the same give or take, somewhere between 180-200 at a guess

Is it possible to fit the head gaskets the wrong way round on these things

I have a vague memory about something like that... but it might be a datto engine

sometimes a copm test might not show up a cracked block as a mate of mine found out the hard way and had to pull his engine down twice.
block was cracked just below the lower oil ring line on the bottom of the stroke.
lucky to have an engine left had to get it sleved.

At the moment I don't even want to think that it's a cracked block! Lol

Yeah with any luck it's something simple and I don't have to pull the engine apart again!

Where exactly is the leak?
Can you photograph it?

Yeah I can take photos in the morning, it is leaking from the seal of the sump and front cover

Fair enough, sounds like the leak is totally unrelated to the milky oil but if there is an issue with the timing case I would be looking there first, post the photos up and we can have a look.

A compression test is not necessarily going to show a leak between the coolant and oil holes thru the head.

No not necessarily but I need to start somewhere, I will do a pressure test on the radiator aswell, other then that it's all guess work
