Worse case scenario would be cracked cylinder head or block.
Did you fit the manifold and or timing case cover?
Do you remember any corrosion at the water jackets?

Did you have the block decked?
Did you have the inlet manifold machined to suit?

block was cracked just below the lower oil ring line on the bottom of the stroke.
lucky to have an engine left had to get it sleved.

A compression test is not necessarily going to show a leak between the coolant and oil holes thru the head.
