Can such a thing be done?????
My engine bay has had a lot of chrome work done and I want to turn it back to standard without having to get all new parts to replace the chromed ones.

you certainly can get stuff dechromed, any chroming place should do it. i just got the panel that the wipers come thru dechromed, not much cheaper than chroming
but who needs shiny stuff.

What kind of parts would you be 'dechroming' rather than replacing? There's still a bit of demand for chromed engine bay components, you could probably make $50 swapping it for factory items from people off this forum instead of paying someone to strip the surface off the parts.

as everyone has said, you would be better off swapping for un chromed stuff, easier on the pocket and everyone gains! and im sure I am not the only one who has standard stuff sitting round

De chroming can be done by either acid ( hydrochloric acid) abrasive( sand blasting) or reverse electro plating , which i cant think of the name of.
type in de-chroming on google and see what application suits your needs.
acid will generally remove the chrome but you need something else to remove the underlying nickle.
The metal the item is made from will determine what way the chrome is removed.
are you going to paint these items, if so just sand and repaint.

My Tip would be to just swap the parts with people on here.... Chromed parts are worth a lot more than standard ones.... Let people know what you got and im sure u will be more than surprised!

...after looking at your CarDomain and those stunning engine bay photos, removing chrome work would be the last thing I'd be doing. Keep it exactly how it is!

Thanks Heath, but I really want to get rid of the booster as it is just that little bit too much.Once I put a standard black one on there I`ll see how much more I need to swap over till I`m Smilin` again.

smiley just be sure you get the same quality if swapping parts , i,d be inclined to dechrome what you already have or source similar parts first then sell off the chrome items later ...

cheers

Dont sandblast chrome, you'll just get a shower of sparks and alot of excess heat trying.
Best way is take it to the electroplaters and have it done, you can paint over the nickel no probs, just prepare it as you usually would ordinary metal, except it wont rust on you. :spoton:
