Hi jennay.

The M40 gearbox is a Tri-Matic.

These are a fairly rare option in SL/R5000s especially in the LH series.

Yup, a trimatic. Did you have the VIN to confirm if it is an SL/R 5000 or a replica?

Yep as others have said M40 = Trimatic. Thats what the tags say on my LJ SL. Got a M20 not however.

RESULTS FOR HOLDEN LH LX UC TORANA VIN: 8D69TEJ450624H

MANUFACTURER: General Motors Holden
SERIES / DEGREE OF LUXURY: SL/R
BODY STYLE: Sedan
ENGINE CODE: 308
CAR YEAR / CHANGES ON 1ST SEPTEMBER: 1975
ASSEMBLY PLANT: Dandenong
SEQUENTIAL PRODUCTION SERIAL: 50624
MODEL CODE: LH

Seems to check out OK. Wonder if it was converted to manual by the dealer? Being near the end of the run it could have been possible, you'd need the delivery sheet to confirm that, although if that's not with the car, or the original manual, then there's no way of getting it.

End of the line, they prolly would have done anything to move them. One of GMH's quirks. Enjoy.

If it has M40 on the tag, then it left the factory as an auto. An LH SLR 5000 auto is fairly rare yes, they were special order only.

would it be worth changing it back to an auto from a manual or leave it a manual?

up to you, depends on how original the rest of the car is and how original you want it to be. How about some pics?

Can anyone tell me if a trimatic M40 transmission can be directly replaced with a manual gearbox and what model number is the manual gearbox for LX 1976 3300 SL

Hijacking a 9½ year old thread, that's gotta be near a record Terry?

In answer to your question, yes a factory M20 (4 speed manual) setup would be a bolt-in conversion, except for cutting a hole in the floor of course.
