The M40 gearbox is a Tri-Matic.
These are a fairly rare option in SL/R5000s especially in the LH series.

Seems to check out OK. Wonder if it was converted to manual by the dealer? Being near the end of the run it could have been possible, you'd need the delivery sheet to confirm that, although if that's not with the car, or the original manual, then there's no way of getting it.

Can anyone tell me if a trimatic M40 transmission can be directly replaced with a manual gearbox and what model number is the manual gearbox for LX 1976 3300 SL

In answer to your question, yes a factory M20 (4 speed manual) setup would be a bolt-in conversion, except for cutting a hole in the floor of course.
