Hi everyone my name is Tim.

I am new member and im looking at buying a LX SS hatchback and was wanting help confirming that the car is genuine please. i did post this info on my intro. ..but i think this is the right spot for it.

Im wanting to know if there is anything else i should be checking for.
here is a list of what i have done so far

car Does Not have original engine (so engine not a concern)

yes is LX8VD77 model

I ran the vin number on torana web vin checker and also rang the motor registery info came back as a sl/r or ss (no sl/r hatchbacks made so assume it is a SS ) ..correct colour...and correct motor size....and year built..

The car has all 3 plates/tags and matching chassis number from what i can work out
i use the LX parts catalogue that i own to cross reference plates (m37758)

month + sequence number = body number
chassis number = saftey compliance plate number

chassis number on end drivers side chasis rail

yes 200km/h dash yellow/orange

i think thats all so far .

Is there anything else to check for please??
And is what i have done so far correct??

They are too expensive to get wrong these days >.<

Thanks
Tim

Try to see if chassis number has been cut from another Lx torana .does it have rts ie sway bars front and rear also what state are you from

just to clarify im just trying to identify the chassis/body as a 100% V8 SS.....not a rebadged--fake - or a 4-6 cyl...ect.

Hey mate, here is the link to give you all the info you need on identifying what you're looking at. It's located in the tech articles sub forum above where you posted this question, which has a few helpful posts in it.

http://www.gmh-toran...fying-your-lhx/

As long as the engine prefix says L31 or L32 it'll be a genuine V8 SS - L20 means it was originally a 202.

hi 009pk is 100% on this regarding the chassis section, j nearly bought an l31 ss hatch in undercoat 10 years ago in the laverton area melb i took a friend whos a panel beater and he eventually found out that the chassis no and tags were fitted to this body

the best way ive found out is by the riverts on the id tags they have hexaginal edges if u look closely,
bring a panel beater or someone who knows these toranas
regards aldo

I think i looked at that car ^^^ . When I looked at the car it was aqua but tags said it was chamois with chamois interior. Engine bay was in under coat and you could clearly see the welded in tray where chasis number is stamped. came with a stuffed big block and no interior. Took 2 years before I found another 1.

The chasis no. should match the driver side id plate, the middle tag should match the passenger side tag via the body number, the engine code should also match between the middle tag and the passenger side tag, I think you can match the driver side tag to the middle tag via the month the car was built ( I am not sure how to though). If the colour of the car matches the tag you are now looking good, but not over the line yet, pull the dash crash pad off and you should see paint over spray on the dash steel frame hopefully it is the same colour as the rest of the car. If all that matches it is 99-100% original. That 1% is a possible very good re-shell.

How'd you go with this mate? Did you clarify everything was as it should be and make the purchase?

Not all SS's have ashtrays in the arm rest. It may have been a later thing, my 7/76 has no ash trays. Only ashtray is in the back of the console.

Nope, it's an early thing- my 2/76 has them as well as back of the console! That with the big one in the dash and every bastard has an
ashtray! Imagine trying to breath in there.

Both my parents smoked, I have not so fond memory's of sitting in the back of our HQ Kingswood gasping for fresh air while mum and dad chuffed away in the front. Certainly turned me off smoking, haven't touched a smoke my entire life, but I think I sucked a few second hand ones in as a kid. Back on the SS's they must have got rid of the ash tray armrests early on

Ok Thankyou all for your input and information. many thanks

For those interested ,the car checked out fine .3 tags all matching with correct chassis number,, correct colour overspray behind dash,, rts installed,,no tampering, cutting, welding or panels repaired( ie chassis number),,no chrome tail light surround or any evidence of old rivets /holes,,no rear ashtrays is a mid- late '77 vechile,,200km/h dash,,ect..ect..
They body is in fairly good condition,,its pretty straight ,slight ding in the nose cone and the original guards have been slightly flared(removed factory bottom lip on wheel arches and applyed some filler) only place on car small fridge magnets didnt stick to when applied to newspaper and dragged along body)) ,, hatch hinges only small surface rust and the rear rubber seal for hatch is good also,,just the typical turret seam area just starting to pitt metal 5 cm long both sides,,also car having a bloody towbar attached at some stage obvisouly dont help things in this area,, inner rear 1/4 panels just got some surface rust,, probably wont need replacing..

little bit on smoking and coupes.............. driving a coupe and smoking DONT work well together as air flow usually blows hot ash back in the extended windows and bingo...you now have a nice burn hole in rear seat :banghead:

anyways yes im now a proud owner of my first lx ss v8 hatch..
yes the sedan got the overnight treatment under the stars last night as i needed a few hours to reorganise and make space in the garage for second torana..and couldnt be bothered at 1am last night

i will be obtaining a 308 HT numbered block from friend for this hatch build..numbers match a lx ss 5ltr hatchback

finally so now the dissision making time .. i initally wanted to get straight into hatch rebuild ..a Full bare metal resto upto show/drive standard..but after talking with friend have decided to at least get sedan back to having topcoat on her.then decide if to keep ,sell or convert into another hatch..
