Hi all,

The gear shifter in my LC was modified (very short), so I picked up another one from the wreckers. It's a celica 5 speed and the new shifter feels much better. However, now when I'm in 4th gear or reverse the shifter just slightly touches the handbrake.

Am I able to move the handbrake back (about an inch) and re-adjust?

Cheers,
Shane

Not easily. There's a bracket (with weld nuts) spotwelded to the floor panel. This bracket also provides reinforcement/stiffness.

Pull up the carpet / cover and take a look for yourself.

I've installed an R31 skyline handbrake in my LC on the side of the tunnel, so anything is possible.

nothing cant be done, but it might be a bit of work... maybe look into shortening the shift like makka said...

If not maybe look into a HQ benchseat style handbrake that goes on the right hand side of the drivers seat.... then u can just hide it for good (unless u have a console. then it might look funny...)

matty, all HQ series holdens have that handbrake setup, not just the bench seat ones. and I said shorten the handbrake lever, not the shifter

I'd rather not do a complete move, I'll take a look on the weekend and see what LHoon is describing with the bracket etc.. Shortening the handle may be an option, will depend on the spring release button I guess.

I looked into this when my Rare Spares shifter fouled on my handbrake. As fair as i can see there is no other car with a shorter handbrake. I would suggest bending the gearlever. You can do this cold if you have enough force, just try not to stress exsisting weild joints etc.

Thats what my dad did on my shifter when we first attempted to rebuild it after i wore out the 'L'

If you choose to move the handbrake back a touch, check to see if cable tensioners are still available. They clamp on to the inner cable under the car and make a bend in the cable making it shorter. This way you could move the lever back a bit and with the adjustment at the lever and the tensioners still maintain correct handbrake travel.
Hope this helps!

firstly you should check that your useing toyota's forward shift
secondly check the bush on the end of the shift aswell as the pin that retains
the shift linkage inside g'box extention (where gearshift goes into)
i run the same setup and i've got shitloads of room

cheers tom :spoton:
