is it 9 links between the marks??? I know the Max Ellery book had mistakes.

9, I found that error in the Ellery book, it only show's 8 in the repeated wrong picture.

What does it matter if your dialling your cam in perfectly off piston head and lifter.

You can only dial a cam in if you have variable timing gears fitted.

I have always used the rolling pins as teh guide which equates to 16. Which funnily enough is teh same as the pic above. When building always rotate the motor by hand once finished as this will tell you whether you have got the timing off(ie the neighbours meet... Mr piston and miss valve, to make the messy family)

It is also an idea to grab a degree wheel and see what rating the cam comes up as this will give you an even better idea of how close teh cam is to right, even if you do not have an adjustable timing set it still gives a great understanding of what is going on.
