Hi,

I was chasing up that same question about a week ago. I checked in a book I have "History of the Holden V8" by Fiv Antoniou and the old 308 heads were just under 56cc.

Cheers.

On the same topic, does anyone have the stock valve sizes of both (and the max that can be put in each). I'm interested to see just how much difference there is in the new vs old heads, as in figures not speculation.

Factory std red heads had a 1.75" intake valve regardless of whether it was a 253 or 308. And I believe a 1.500" exhaust.
L34's ran a 1.94" Intake and 1.6" exhaust.
VN's run the same sizes as L34, but a slightly different length.
I believe it is possible to got to a 2.02, maybe even a 2.05" intake, but it would depend on the condition of the seats and the head.

There is a world of difference between the two port layouts, chop up an early head and compare it to a VN casting.

thanks Bottledup!

I've seen a few shit hot 308s with VN heads claiming with 2.02 intake, so I assumed that was pretty much as big as you can go. My mate has just had a set of HQ heads ported and big valves etc. There's no need to convince us that VN heads are better. I've got VN heads ready to get worked for mine. My mate just got stuck down that route when he rebuilt his engine and has gone too far to change the cam, manifold, extracters etc now. Acording to the head guys its as big as they can go with the valves(no seat left) , so I'd say they're 1.94/1.60.
