OK, thank you all for your input - here's where I'm at...

I went out to the local diff shop that has experience with banjos.

I explained to him what was happening, and without hesitation he said pinion & crownwheel - when I asked for clarification on what he meant, he said 'they're stuffed'

I questioned again if there could be any other explanation, and he said 'no - whine on load is gears - they need to be replaced, and good 3.08:1 Banjo gears are getting hard to get'

\.... So, I pulled the centre out today to see if I could see anything. I thought there was a more noticable 'shine' on the gears than what I could remember, and also a sharp edge on the crownwheel teeth that I'm not sure was there before....AND THEN I NOTICED.... one of the bearing cap bolts was loose!

I'm guessing this has played a part, but unsure now whether it has stuffed the gears or not?

While I've got it out, I'll try & take it back out to the diff shop tomorrow and see what he thinks. But if it's buggered, I'll tighten up the bolt & put it back in - and then expedite the BW conversion....

Question is, if it is still whining, is running it in the car until I get the BW sorted going to cause any other problems (other than the unbearable noise)?

If you put it back in treat it gently as the wear in the gears will get worse quickly if the case hardening is worn away.

Worst case, you might lose a tooth/teeth or parts thereof off the gears.

Tighten it up look at the contact pattern and stick it back in .I think you will find it will quieten down .It is tooth contact when rectified it will usually stop whining .

Tighten it up, take it easy and save money for a conversion. I chipped a tooth off a banjo diff probably 25 years ago. It made a hell of a bang and then a load groaning noise. Still managed to drive it 5 KM home, though.

Tightened it up, and put it back in... there is wear on the edges of the teeth... whine is still there, but definitely a lot quieter than before.

Well, it couldn't be any worse.

Or could it?

That tends to fix a lot of engine noises as well.
