Am seeking information, pics/photos etc for the above 'former' Holden Dealer.

I understand Cambell's Motors opened up in August 1952 at 518 - 538 High St, Preston (Melb).

They were Authorised Sales and Service for Holden, Chevrolet, Buick, Mapl Leaf.

Of particular interest, is when did this Dealership cease to trade? (ie close down).

Cheers Dave

Many thanks on this one.

Though, still trying to figure when and why this Dealership closed.

Cheers

I've no idea why the dealership closed but the 2nd of the 2 newspaper adverts still has it trading in Dec 1968.

I live in Sydney so I'm not familiar with this dealership, but GM-H had major changes in their structure in the late 60s & early 70s. There was at one time, 3 separate levels of Holden dealership: Distributor, dealer & sub-dealer. GM-H simplified this & made all dealerships equal. When this happened the total number was reduced dramatically, from nearly 700 to around 450. Could it be that Campbell's closed during this period ?

I've found the best resource for this info is a library. In Sydney we have the State Reference library in the city & it has just about every Australian publication that ever was, including newspapers & more importantly phone books. You can check out the Yellow Pages (or Pink Pages as they were then) for each & every year. Every dealership will be listed, so at least you will know exactly which year it closed down, but unfortunately you won't know why.

The total count of dealers that have existed in the GMH system is over 2700 and generally exaggerates by about 30% to 50% how many dealer/service and spare parts outlets it has or had.

Had a look through my LC Owner's Manual last night.

In the rear of the book, listed are the Metroplitan AND Country GMH Dealer locations.

Without counting them (may well do one bored arvo...), there are literally almost hundreds for each State alone!

Which begs the question, how many GMH Dealers are there now in each State? A lot LESS I bet!

Cheers Dave

Last year when GMH were claiming 320 nationally it was actually under 250.

Hi

As a matter of interest (according to my LJ Owner Manual)

In Jan 1972 there were 521 GMH dealers in Aust.

172 NSW
121 Vic
89 Qld
62 SA
61 WA
12 Tas
3 NT
1 ACT

As at Dec 2005 - there were only 288 (probably less now).

It would interesting to see what that figure was in the 1967/68 era, before the 'culling' began.

Dr Terry

June 66

QLD   metro 12 country 83     =  95

NSW  metro 32 country 138  =170

Vic     metro 43 country 97    =140

Tas    metro! 5  country 7      =  12

SA     metro 15 country 55    =  70

WA    metro 9 country  48     = 57

NT     4                                  = 4

 ACT was includes in NSW

total 548 (according to a June 66 owner book)

Owners books are not a reliable source, if there was more than one dealer in a town or location under the country

dealers list it only records that there is a dealer at this location not how many.

e.g. ACT in June '66 had at least 4 dealerships, but was only recorded as Canberra.

Hi,

I have lived in the Preston area all my life and have been in Campbells motors many times.

They got taken over by Graham Hunt motors and after a while he built new Dealership building over the road at 573-603 high st, Preston which is still there as Ralph D'Silva Holden.

If I am correct Graham Hunt Holden went bust but I might be wrong.

I would contact Ralph D' Silva to see if they know of any past History.

Campbell motors advertised in the local paper 'The Preston Times' a lot, the Preston library should have copies of the Preston Times in there archives.

Campbell Motors had one of the Protoype Holdens which they used in there ads and there name was signwritten

all over it much to my disgust.

The old Campbell Motors building was pulled down and a Super clinic is built on it now.
