We all know my car is an "S" and I want to make it a GTR replica.

I'd like to swap a tag........But not what you think.

I have just cleaned up my tags and found the big one is an 82369 and the small one a 82311 and I'm not happy.

Is it wrong for me to put another tag on that is off a 2 door "S"?

I think it's OK seeing the tag I have is incorrect, by putting a 82311 tag on I am keeping the car with the correct sort of tag.  I can't see any licensing issues cause they only want an engine and chassis number.

Advice appreciated but hopefully I don't get shot down in flames for swapping tags.

BTW  the big tag on firewall matches the chassis number but not sure if the little tag belongs on this car aswell. How can I tell?

Cheers

Marty

Hi Marty

82369 is a 4 door S model. I am assuming that this is on the Body Identification tag that has the Trim and Paint details?

As you say, the registration authorities are after the stamped Chassis Number. As far as I know they don't check to see if the Chassis Number on the ADR tag matches the stamped number.

If you have the VIN (the long thin tag starting with 82311) and the Chassis Number - I can give you an idea as to whether the ADR tag and the VIN tag are of a similar date.

Cheers

So no complaints about using a Tag of another car to get mine to be more original???

Thought the 4 door boys would have mentioned I should keep the 4 door tag for better resale. :-)

Besides it being illegal to fit a tag from another car, it will not make your car any more original than it is without the tag.

while not advocating tag swaps......you never know, in 20 years time a 2 door may be worth a fortune, and the tags really importantant.  but .in this case hasnt the swap already been done by someone earlier on?

i.e. are the tags on the car now?..if so, then all you are doing is replacing a non orig. tag with another non orig. tag?

Seems to me that niether of the tags really belong on that chassis anyway, so what's the difference?

aplogies if I have got this wrong, or missed something....

You've got it spot on.

If I leave the tag off, someone might think it's a GTR and to me that is worse than replacing a wrong tag to a semi correct tag.

What law am I breaking by doing this?  Sounds like it's legal to pull and leave this tag off a car?  This tag only shows body shape, paint trim, etc

Is there a chance there could be multiple tags like this eg torana S with same trim, paint etc which I could look for and therefore the same tag is going on.  Maybe wishfull thinking.

Cheers

Marty

Can't you just get the original tag recreated?

The tag has a number on it that relates to the skinny vin tag right ?

So if you put the wrong one on it won't match the skinny tag you have

Which raises more questions than not having the tag at all in my mind

The tags and matching body numbers are the cars identity... its now lost that... so let it go

Enjoy the car for what it is and what you build

You know what it is.. .your documenting your build so anyone else can know what it is

Isn't that better than having the wrong tag on it ?

The skinny tag shows what the car is ... the large one also does and shows the paint/trim/driveline... but do you really want the details off the wrong car anyway ?

Yes there will be 2dr S models out there with the same paint and trim combo but finding an available body tag with the same combo and made in the same production plant could prove to be difficult.

The Body number on the tag is a completely different matter.

AFAIK it is illegal in all states of Australia to remove or interfere with the unique identifiers on a car and definitely illegal to replace them with tags from another.

That said, no one (cops included) other than forum members and visitors is probably going to be the wiser if you have fitted the body ID tag from another 1972 2dr S.

Ok one question at a time..

Are all Body Id Tags different?   ie Holden make 2 cars exactly the same.  or is there a unique number on it as well.

As these cars are 40 years old, and lots of LC-LJ have lost some of there Tags, due to frontal accidents and some taken off and lost or stolen, why cant someone like Rare Spares with Holden, make replacement tags if you can prove your car is the car that the tag numbers belong to, i cant see how it would be a problem, as long as you have proof by rego papers etc. Just Saying

If two cars were made exactly the same in the same production plant then the only difference on their body ID tag will be the Body Number. If they were made one the same day there is a chance their body numbers will be very close in the number sequence. If they were made months apart then there will be a big difference in their body numbers.

Edit: Revised body tags that included the Eng, Trans and Rear axle option codes were introduced into production in late December 1972.

The only legal thing for you to do is leave the tag off altogether, unless you can find the original tag off of the car.

The body ID tag has, as stated above, a unique body number on it, which will never match your car.

The least-dodgy thing you can do is leave the tag off...

It maybe illegal but who out there does everything by the law? Not many I'd say.

If my car was being restored as an "S" then the car would be what it is. The fact that I'm changing the appearance of the car to GTR means I want to let as many people know it's not what it looks like, it's only an "S"

I want a two door "S" tag on the car to help stop the dodgy look of cars not being what they are.  Sure it may say it's another colour with different trim etc.  The tag is never going to make the car something it isn't, It just completes the car. I have no bad intentions which is what makes this whole thing suck.

I just don't see the point... It sounds like you're not going to sell it, which is the only time the numbers are going to be talked about. It's a lot easier to explain why a tag is missing than in it is to explain why you've got a different car's tag.

Just make up a tag that simply says 'I wish I was a GTR' :spoton:

Marty there was a blank one on gumtree a few months ago.

I have some ute tags here you could put on just to confuse and wind people up.

The main thing is Marty , it's your car do what ever makes you happy.

My fluffy dice are apparently illegal but I have no plans to remove them.
