Hi there,

am thinking of bringing my torana from nz to oz,

over here when we alter the car from standard ie put v8 in it or change susp we need to get a certification before we can get a warrant of fitness,  Do you guys need to do something like that or are you free to re power your cars without problems?

Its about 5000000000 times as strict over here. Depending on your state, have a very close look at the modefication guidelines.

Cheers.

Luckily for you thats where im from, and we are int he process of adopting NCOP here and i've been reading heavily upon it.

Spend a few hours here:

http://www.tmr.qld.g...ifications.aspx

And you will have all your questions asked.

Note, mod plates are frOckign expensive now, went from $80 for the plate and $20 for each mod up to $250 per mod.....So dont expect this to be a cheap endeavour.

BAsically they dont want us driving modefied cars, or anything more than 4 years old lol.

Cheers.

I looked bring my hatch over to QLD when I moved from NZ 6 years ago and gave it up as a bad idea

It can be easyier if the car has previously been registered in OZ, however if your car has crash history forget it

you will need all the tags including ADR which a NZ car will not have

You will need to install all pollution control crap on the car, which a NZ car will not have, so will have to source and install, this will stuff up the tune of you car as no doubt is was not setup for it

Also have to have the car inspected and you can resonibly expect that to be differicult

Also if you car is anything like mine was, it was built to meet NZ requirements and stuff here is a lot tighter, I was looking at new exhaust, getting the car engineered for all the mods and then rego and insurance over here are way way more expensive, I was $200 a year full rego in NZ, QLD more like $1000 for a V8

I paid $200 a year comprehenive insurance over here I pay $700 for a shit box Suzuki Swift, stock standard so I hate to think what V8 Torana would be unless it was club rego and never ever driven but then whats the point in that.

What I did was left the car in storage for 9 months and looked at what would be required to get it here and on the road, once I realised just how much was involved I sold my car in NZ as the easier option, and then the prices crashed so good move in the end, that said Torana hatchs are expensive over here and relativily cheap and unloved in NZ, and American cars are expensive in NZ and cheap (ish) over here.

The other advanage of leaving the car in storage for a bit as after being here for a while you might not find the place as attractive as you first thought, I have been bittin a couple of times by spiders, lucky I am resonably imune, however been attacked by a snake in a AC unit scared the $^&* out me for days, literly staring death in the face. I work in remote sites, a few days later a guy I work with a couple of time had the same thing happen to him they reckon he was dead before his body hit the ground.

Although most Aussie will tell you the chances of seeing a snake are remote, it does happen and I am very aware that with my work my chances of contact are much much higher

I live in country victoria and I've seen 1 snake in 35 years in the wild.

I literally live in the scrub and spend most of my spare time outside.  Snakes are not as common down here DJ.

I have hundreds of kangas hang at my joint though....but they are just old mates :P

FAir enough...Think im up to 20 or so at work in the last 7 years....And i work IN TOWN.....Cleaning up the paint bay move a few things and find a 6ft slithery thing just chilling is a bit nerve racking...Same as wandering around the back fo the shed to take a piss and seeing a waaay bigger snake than you expected...But you get used to it, Snakes are not territorial, let them go on there way and there cool....

Cheers.

That is my opinion, as someone who looked into it, BUT your situation might be different, if your car is completely stock standard and was previously regisitared in OZ then it could be quite easy, hence I suggest leave the car in storage come on over, the natives are mostly friendly if a little strange  :stirpot: and then you can see the lie of the land and find out more easly by talking to a local engineer what you will need and what it will cost if your car is modified. Bring lots of photos and video to show him if you can

never reg in oz, built here i think.

All in all i think you may be convinving me to sell it here, and buy another over there.

Will put in storage for a while and suss out things over there first

its gonna cost $4500 to ship it over, then compliance cost and reg

$4500 sounds a little high, I think I priced it at $3000 but if I could wait there are times when you can get in with others and do a deal I think $1500 was the best I saw but needed to get the car to Christchurch to do it.

this sounds really bad,but if the car isnt a genuine style car, which it sounds like it isnt.it might be worth importing it as a 'race car'  and buying a cheap torana over here aswell. andmaybeswapsomebitsoverlikenumberscough

Hi Jason

I imported my Torana a few years ago and it was relatively easy although costly. I did not have to pay stamp duty or GST on it as I had owned for quite awhile before importing it. You do not need the ADR tag to licence your car here (how many yanky cars are here with no ADR plate).

Kiwi's need not be scared of snakes, but they do need to watch out for the Drop Bears so be careful when walking under trees when in Oz.
