would it be worth tapping a thread in it and screwing a plug in?

Cheers

Its a common mod to thread tap and use NPT plugs for the oil gallery plugs. If you're talking about the big one at the rear some of them are quite solid - they need a fair amount of force to properly wedge into place but won't move once in.

im talking the big concaved plug at the back of the engine, have done the small ones at front.

would need a 15/8th tap. then need a very thin plug as the trans flange sits over it.

Concave?   Convex to look at when installed, Atleast before you hit it with a hammer to lock it in. Never lost one myself even with hi volume oil pumps, Should not be a lot of pressour at that spot anyway. Atleast if the oil is getting back to sump as it should.

Never tried silicone on a welsh plug, Permatex Aircraft grade (Hard setting) may help, I normaly would use permatex 3 for that plug, Not hard setting but have never had a problem

I wouldn't use silicone. Slippery shit. I've always use No 3 gasket cement.

Don't hit the middle of the welch plug. Lay a flat piece of steel on the rim of the plug and hit that.

^ The domed one at the back of the cam needs to be hit in the middle to get it to spread and lock into place. Don't be shy about hitting it.

Oh and yes, use aircraft sealant not silicon
