LC GTR Drilled Door Handles

Sorry about that but not much rhymes with forums.

I spotted these window winder, door pull, and door handles on an LC GTR Torana that was at Torana the Great at Bathurst last year.

Anybody got ideas on why the handles had holes very neatly drilled in them.

Perhaps they may have been done for a promotional thing way back then :blink:

This very lovely LC GTR only had 31,000 odd miles on it.

Hi,

They are aftermarket door handles, I'm pretty sure?
The picture is kinda low quality so its hard to tell, but rares do billet ones and you can get different ones from heaps of places, so maybe they are like a 70's-80's aftermarket item.

I've seen handles similar to those on HQ's and things like that.

Mine are bog standard handles and I actually don't like the holes in those but the rest of the car is Mickey Mouse

It's only a matter of personal choice.

I do have a set of the door pull handles which will go on when I get a chance. Got them about a year ago when a friend was working as a spare parts manager.

He found 2 sets sitting out the back on a shelf and gave one pair to me and kept the other for his GTR. Some times you can be in the right place at the right time. Price was very cheap.

As far as the pic not being of good quality, I've now got a digital camera which is a big advantage for taking pics of car bits and pieces.

Hopefully that LC GTR will be at the Nationals next Easter and I'll take squillions of pics for reference.

I think it's quite obvious that those holes have been drilled for weight reduction...

Haven't you ever heard of 'speed-holes'?

If that GTR was a metallic brown colour, then it could well be the one that used to belong to the caretaker of Holden's Lang Lang proving ground. When I saw it years ago the display board said that he made and documented many modifications to the car, including these door pull handles (and lets face it, they would make the doors a whole lot easier to close!) It was a lovely little car with a unique history, I hope it has gone to a good home!

That car was at the Phillip Island Museum by memory and I think the same car you are talking about.

The owner had died and the person who now owns it was at Torana the Great last year at Bathurst.

I believe the value put on it by some of the Torana entusiasts there was $20,000.
I would agree to that.

Those drilled handles are referred to as Billett handles, ie most probably made from a solid block of alloy and polished to a chrome like shine. They are common on many Street Machines where the owner wants something a tad different to what is fitted as standard but still functional.

I am unsure if they are available in the plastic metal aka shitite also

Mine have HOLDEN and the part number under the grip.

They must have cost a fortune if made out of billet steel.

I suppose it was

to do something like that to your car back then.

Although I was young and driving hotted up cars, I never modified those sort of things.

As Heath said holes make em lighter so back in the 70s we drilled holes in lots a things eg. LJ steering wheel - holes - lightweight :rolleyes:

you should remember these things Barry :lol:

62 - 69 were my teen years and when I was hotting up cars, I didn't pay much attention to modifying any thing else but motors, exhausts, suspension and wheels.

hey Barry, if you get a chance next time
you see that GTR, check out the compliance
plate, its the only 12/1960 Torana ever
made!!! It was a typo, probably why it was sold to
a Holden employee. As was said before it has
quite an interesting history

Those handles with the holes in them look kinda autobarn/supercheap.. guess the owner cant really take them out, would leave holes in the door trims.

Either Daytona Bronze, Burnished Bronze Met or Cinnamon Brown.

All colours from 1969 nto 1971

G'day

I think those handles are drilled originals as they are identical (minus holes) to mine and if the owner wanted to replace them, then the ones I have will fit exactly to the same holes. That's if a set can be found.

My LC Breakaway Accessory brouchure has a pic of those handles.

I thought it looked familiar! I'm originally from Mudgee and I built my LC there, I used to buy parts off Richard every second weekend :rolleyes:

. Now, I love my Toranas, but there's something wrong with that bloke hehehe. I was lucky to have him around while I was building my car.

He is of course the great Harry Firth. The instigator of the Holden Dealer Team and manager of same I believe from 1969 to 1979. Some one might correct me if its wrong.

Harry was at Torana the Great last year at Bathurst and is a true gentleman.
He is now 86 and is sharp as a tack but his body is letting him down some-what.

He wasn't nick-named "Harry the Fox" for nothing and was very inventive and smart when it came to getting the best out of a race car.

If his health is good, then he might be at the GTR & XU-1 Nationals next Easter at Bathurst.

reackon you could drill holes in the standard window winders (professionally done ofcourse) without losing to much strenght? I actually like the look of the holes.
