Forgive me if this is on the forum some where but i tried looking.

How much horsepower can i expect to throw through the b/w78 before i do some major damage?

Just trying to think long term.

Thanks

Theres some drag racers using them in VL's making over 1000hp and running into the 9's

Probably not exactly stock though

Well basically...

In stock for the axles will be as good as any Ford 28 spline axle... since they are all the same size

Obviously a 31 spline axle is stronger.. .and gets stronger (thicker) the more splines you use.

i.e all 28 spline Ford and Holden axles are essentially the same diameter.

The centres are pretty good 4 pinion units but the lsd's are alittle weak... I'll still be using one in my car though

New genuine replacement units have been out of production for a couple of years and no saying if/when they will be back

For parts availability a Ford 9" will always win hands down

Theres just so much more available at a cheap price

But some people don't want to fit them cause they are heavier in standard form... but can be lightened up with sheet metal housings and alloy centres

How much power are you planning on running through your diff?

Spicer axle rated the M78 at 220kw/435 nm which I expect would be rather conservative.

Gearboxes and diffs are normally rated by torque. The amount of torque the diff receives depends on the flywheel torque and the gearbox ratio. Torque is affected by gearbox ratio but horsepower is not.

Its sounding like the borgy is the way to go. I mean, i may take it to the strip every month or so and a burnout here and there but no serious track events.

I guess if i start getting some serious horsepower just get some billet axles and a kaaz or something?

Datto, what is your diff out of?

Got a couple

Skyline and VS ute

Ones going into a Torana the other into a datto

Similar HP figures... but different torque :)

One of our club members has a red hatch with a cammed LS2 makeing over 400 at the tyres, and has had no problems with his Borg Warner 78. It only has billet axels, standard 4 pinion centre.

Seems guys with lighter cars get away with it a lot more. My mates wagon astro6(perth people may know it) still runs the bw78 last one he had built lasted 60km and 7 passes. The wagon weighs 1500kg n makes 1380nm torque. I know of a couple other lighter cars making similar torque with no issues. He's going 9 inch now

What engine makes 1380 nm /1018 ftlbs?

Sounds like the torque is being measured at the roller on the dyno which means it has been multiplied by the gearbox, diff and tyres.
