I've had this in the shed for a while now, but slowly been doing a bit here & there. Haven't got any pics from when I first got, I've lost them somewhere on the computer. It had a little bit of rust in the left sill but the rest of the body is rust free, wasn't very straight but no rust. I've painted the body with the bolt on panels to be painted in the coming weeks.

Here it is,  Valencia Orange. It'll be painted as a replica Sandman, the blackouts are yet to be done. The ute tub will be painted with a product that doesn't chip too easy.

Upol has just released a new product called "raptor liner".

Rep only visited me with brocures last week so its still pretty new on the market.

Its a 2k tub liner, like the real expensive ute liner stuff you can get, but this stuff doesnt need a 15k machine to put it on, just mix it and put it on with a body deadener gun..

I have yet to try it, just thought i would mention it.

Cheers.

We've used that Raptor liner at work a few times, it's pretty good stuff. We are yet to use it in the tub of a ute though, we use it on the underside of cars, looks neat and tidy and easy to apply. I'll be using it on the underside of my hatch when i get to that stage. If i knew about it when i did my ute, i would have used it for sure. I used a product called Hippo Liner in my ute and it wasn't really that good, i wouldn't recommend it really. Raptor liner though, i'd recommend.

Orange looks perfect on HQ-WB Holden utes IMO. Probably look much like mine when it's done.

What are the rest of the plans for it?

A mate of mine had Rhino liner put in his old Hilux and he couldn't fault it, threw concrete in the back and it didn't even scratch or dent the tray.

He has bought a new Lux but didn't get any satisfaction out of the Rhino guys not returning his phone calls, etc so he found another brand and this one you can colour code, if you are interested i can get the name and contact details for you.

At this stage the ute will have a 202 with a turbo or a big block chev 6(250/292), with a Saginaw & B/W diff.

You weren't suppose to notice them, they are the only wheels that have with tyres on that will hold air, I will dispose of them ASAP.

I can't wait until you try a 292 in it. I wouldn't use a Saginaw for towing though, they are too tall in 1st and not that strong. I'd simply use a TH400, and then you can use all factory bits like tailshaft, speedo, T-bar or column shift etc, and the 292 will bolt straight to it.

Only hassle will be registering a WB with a 292!

Just remember, these beasts only have a towing capacity of 1590 KG. Which isn't much when you consider most car trailers weigh around 600 KG.

Saginaw box that I have is 3.11 1st gear, similar ratio as the M20 Holden box. Ute is HZ.

The ute will probably be 1st registered with a 202 unless 292 pops up at the right price before hand.

That is a bit better! At least you'll be able to use first gear. Is it a WB body? You'll have the same problems with a HZ as a WB with a 292.

My Torana with tools+fuel on the trailer weighs1600kg, so when I remove the tools & fuel & put them in the ute, should be under the 1590kg.

Where does that figure come from? I didn't think Holden stated tow capacities for vehicles of that era, leaving the maximum to the lesser of the tow coupling or the weight rule.

NSW RTA says the following:

If the vehicle manufacturer has not specified the maximum towing mass, the maximum towing mass is:

One and a half times the unladen mass of the towing vehicle, provided that the trailer is fitted with brakes which are connected and in working order, or

The unladen mass of the towing vehicle if the trailer does not require brakes.

The unladen mass of a 6cyl HZ ute is about 1350kg - I can get exact figures, but the GVW is 2155kg, and the carrying capacity is 15.5cwt (775kg) if it isn't an XU4 (10cwt - 500kg) which gives you about 1350kg. 1.5 x 1350kg is just over 2tonne.

Yeah our rules are similar with the max being the lesser of 1.5 times the unladen mass, the max capacity of the coupling (i.e. ball/bar setup) and the max capacity of the vehicle as stated by the manufacturer. I was under the impression that there is no such thing as the latter for the HZ (compared with say a VS Commodore where GMH actually stated max towing capacity depending on the auto trans cooler, additional braces etc). I use my HZ ute as my tow wagon too, I wouldn't want to put much more than 2 tonne behind it but I'm happy it does up to that quite well and safely for short trips - leaf springs and full chassis make all the difference.

Anyway sorry for the thread hijack, look forward to seeing progress. The Chev six would be cool!

I don't have a problem with towing 2 tonne with a HQ-WB ute, van or tonner. A V8 van by NSW rules can tow about 2200kg and a V8 1-tonner could tow as much as 2500kg if its tray was heavy enough to make it weigh 1660kg (2660kg GVW - 1000kg load), even more if it had a heavy pantech on it, which of course would reduce its actual load capacity.

This rule seems a bit silly in some ways though, a HT-HG GTS350 weighs 3316lb (approx 1500kg) so can tow 2.25 tonnes. I know which one i'd rather tow with (a HZ 308 TH400 ute or van).

I just looked back at the ADR plate of my old HZ Overlander, it had a GVW of 2800kg, so its unladen weight should have been around 1800kg, so it would have been legally able to tow 2700kg.

I could always take the body of this chassis & sit it on the HJ chassis that I have.

NSW RTA says the following:

If the vehicle manufacturer has not specified the maximum towing mass, the maximum towing mass is:

One and a half times the unladen mass of the towing vehicle, provided that the trailer is fitted with brakes which are connected and in working order, or

You beat me to to it, I thought that was the case, but have check first.
