Hi all

I did an auto to manual conversion on my LC a little while back .. http://www.gmh-toran...nversion-on-lc/ and all has been great.. except.... there has been a rattle developing and getting worse.

I thought of the usual suspects like clutch plate springs, thrust bearing and the like... this is actually the second clutch I have put in it as I got this noise from when I finished the conversion and thought they gave me a dud clutch kit... at least this one has lasted 2000 k's

Well... it got the better of me today so I ripped the box out to have a look... clutch plate springs are fine, thrust bearing seems ok... however... I did find the inner ring of the pressure plate was loose and making the noise... not sure what its called but the inner wire ring that sits under the rivet like things in the top pic below...

Clutch_zpsfd62e2ef.jpg

Clutch1_zpsb35c9f2f.jpg

Also, the wear mark of the thrust bearing on the spring fingers looks to be very erratic.. not a smooth sharp wear line...

I looked at the first clutch kit I had in and that was the same... Is it just dud kits or is there something else going on? Anyone else had this or can offer some advice?

Cheers

Im going to bring the clutch in for him to have a look tomorrow... he reckons he has seen this before....

You do have the correct spigot bush installed at the correct depth?

Roger Rexy...

New bush installed when I did the conversion... wear marks look good where the input shaft has been running so it is supporting the shaft... it was a snug fit and is still firm, not floating in the crank...

I have been trying to figure out how it can be out of alignment!! Spacer plate between the box and block, dowels in the bell housing... go figure...

Eric, what bolts are you using to hold the pressure plate to the flywheel?

Pics please.

I had no bolts when I put the bits together so I got some high tensile bolts at the nuts and bolt shop... they are 25mm with a spring...

What you thinking Dave?

Hmmm... bolts too long you reckon rodomo? there is only 10mm of thread being used in the flywheel!!!

Maybe!

Eric, those bolts are not the correct type. The genuine bolts have a blank section on the shaft, under the head. This blank section of the shaft is slightly larger in diameter to fit snugly into the holes in the pressure plate as well as engaging into the smooth bore section at the beginning of the bolt hole in the flywheel.

I suspect what is happening is the bolts you have are allowing the pressure plate to sit out of centre on the flywheel, causing the pressure plate to be out of alignment with the clutch plate, flywheel and throwout bearing.

Hmmm.. ok.. so I guess the question is can I still get the correct bolts? Can you throw up a pic Dave when you can or if anyone else can...

I can understand your theory Dave.. it makes sense... Dowel bolts......

Just had look in my tins of Holden bolts, seems I don't have any spare clutch cover to flywheel bolts.

Hopefully someone else has some they can post a pic of.

I doubt you'll get new genuine bolts. Might need to try the wreckers or other forum members may be able to help?

I think the eccentric throwout bearing wear marks on the diaphragm fingers speak volumes about your problem, or maybe the clutch kits you're buying are simply rubbish.

Well Dave... again.. thanks very much for the info!!! A true guru... speaks volumes for your wealth of knowledge...

Something I would not even thought of... It all makes sense now and agree with your theory and the reason for the plate to possibly be out of whack....  I'll try track some bolts down but if anyone has a few spare in there parts bin and are willing to part with them, please let me know....

Cheers!!

Don't forget to take the clutch assy and your bolts back to Mandurah Performance and see what he has to say about it.

Cheers

Dave.

Cheers..

The bolt on the left is a Holden pressure plate bolt, the right is std grade 8 bolt. ARP produce new bolts or studs.Attached File  2013-06-12_07-46-32_512.jpg   200.46K   2 downloads

Might work for the factory ones, it's been so long since I have used a factory setup I can't remember. The CRS aftermarket V8 ones will barely support the tip of the input shaft on a T5 or R 154 if whacked in as far as they will go.

Dave... can you tell me if the spring washer go on or not for the clutch pressure plate please?

Now... while Im at it... because I didnt have bolts.. I also got non genuine bolts for the bell housing. It has 2 dowels so will that be ok or should the bell housing bolts have the same dowel type bolts?

Cheers

Yes you need spring washers on the clutch bolts.

From memory the bell housing bolts have a section of their shank that isn't threaded, however I'm sure they don't dowel/locate into the engine block like the clutch cover bolts do on the flywheel.
