A narrower track would have to be from wider wheels with more positive offset, the diff itself won't be narrower.

Spot on. Many years ago I converted my 4Cyl VC Commodore to 6 cylinder power. I decided to keep the "Torana" stud pattern and fit Volvo 15" alloys to the car.
To do this I simply fitted the 6 cylinder Commodore diff with the 4 cylinder axles. Later we fitted the 4 cylinder diff to a mates 4.2 litre VC. To do that we fitted the V8 axles, backing plates and discs to the 4 cylinder housing and swapped the uni joint yoke.
That made for a pretty rapid 253 Commodore.
FWIW the 4 cyl Commodores had the same diameter front rotors as the 6 and V8 Commodores and even the same pads it's just that the rotors were solid not vented.
The only difference between 4 cyl and 6 cylinder Commodore rear brakes is the stud pattern on the drum itself.
