atm I'm looking in another thread how to get the starfire engine balanced right out so it stops its rattling. but I cant really see me stretching the capacity beyond a 2.3l.. and a 2.3l 4 cyl is a pretty big 4 without balance shafts.

So I've been thinking for a while, that one way to make a genuine 'holden' 4 cyl is to cut down a 308. cut and shut the heads, crank and block. even with cutting down a 5l it still will only give a 2.5l which isnt radical....BUT, what If i cut down a 383 stroker crank - to give a 3.1l four.

Nice I hear you say? not too bad, but being a 4 cyl, it would have balance issues as any big 4cyl. unless balance shafts could be put into it. BALANCE SHAFTS? I say? in a holden v8? I started to look around, and the buick 3.8l v6 has one- yes ONE balance shaft - and its fitted in the valley between the heads. Looking at the picture of the 3.8l v6 I can see how a holden 'v4' could be machined to accept a (rather short) balance shaft.....

Hey and while I'm dreaming I could buy a rather expensive come alloy holden block and some alloy heads to bring the weight RIIIGHT down. with big holden breathing heads, a 3.1l v4 would be so short in the engine bay it might improve the weight distribution of.... anything its fitted to!........

But why would you.

a cut down alloy come engine, plus custom crank to get 3.1 L.

Or a current 3.6 ish l V6.

not sure where the benefit is in what you are doing other than 'the doing'.

If the doing wasnt enjoyable, I would be at a ferrari or porker or some other checkbook restorer's forum. :)

(Insert some witty quote by a dead guy about the destination being so much more savored with an intereresting journey)

- or some junk about the road less travelled.

-because If I wanted a Quick/fast/efficient/greenie-stamped/cheap journey, I'd buy a new car.

You could just get a Ford, yes there you go I said it, a Ford V4 (comes with a balance shaft) paint it Rocket Red and put Holden decals on the rocker covers.

No one will ever know it's original heritage :stirpot:

It would be easier to chop the 308 block the other way wouldn't it ?

For an inline four ? And find an existing crank to suit the bore spacings....

There's a big Chevy four banger I've got an article about somewhere, 3.5  or possibly 4 litre.

It's been put in an old Pommy sports car and is turboed if I remember rightly.

thx purrlx! scat v4's look the goods, - a holden version of course. they look waaaaay cool. might need to put em behind a tri or thm700 tho.

@GTR - U9X

yeah that would look like a good idea, but looking at a 308 block, I dont see ow that would be done (scratches head) how would you do it?

have you got a link to that article?

You can always put half a Nissan engine in it

Pontiac's old Trophy 4 engine, basically half of a 389. Note the flat plane crank. And yes, it did vibrate. Bloody heavy too.

What about an LS.5? :-)

I think there's speedway car division (Midget?) that run a straight four that looks like a sliced down the middle 350 Chev.

They output 350 horse power... here's a pic

Yep I've seen one ,and they work well . I cant see why you couldn't make it work with a Holden if you were handy with a hacksaw .Or just buy the chev version.

@matvex Thanks mate, looks good googling now.

@oldjohnno Yes I'm very aware of the trophy 4, love it, john delorean was a cool creator/thinker.Dont mind his stainless steel marvel either.

what I really like is the driveshaft and transaxle. The transaxle was used in the holden hurricane.

The short side radius in that pic makes me cringe.

I see 'Trophy' it's real name hey Oldjohnno,

Yes it does look a bit choked up, so those engines must not have performed well then?  Dave I

The Pontiac V8s could be made to go pretty well, so I'd assume the 4's would be the same. Apparently guys are getting 300 odd hp out of them these days, N/A. Vibration can be a big problem though, not so much with injection but they'll shake carbs so badly that they can't, um, carburate.
