Ok heres what you've all been waiting for.....The Start Up of Rusty The Torana.

Actually this is the second start......I done the cam run in first without videoing it cause its just too busy keeping an eye on oil pressure, temp and any leaks that may occur.

Rusty started first kick and got oil pressure instantly......I primed the system by using a fitting in the oil sender hole with a piece of rubber tube attached then proceeded to use a pump oil can to fill the system until I got oil right up to the rockers...it was easy and filled in no time.....replaced sender and away she went..

The engine runs nice and sounds great but very loud....no exhaust yet but thats coming.

Im running VN heads with stainless valves....H286 cam....LT1 valve springs....flat top pistons..... torque power dual plane manifold ... roll master timing gear...... Quaddy and extractors.

Compression ratio is 10;1 as quoted from my engine machinist and all is good so far.

Just a couple of questions.....what would be the recommended spark timing..... initially and what Idle rpm would be right for this donk.

Any way heres a quick vid of the start up

Cheers

Al

Good to see it running Al, you will be terrorising the local streets soon, I usually do my timing and idle out on the road when it is driveable, different fuels will make a difference but i wind the timing up until i get  some pinging under load, and then back it off till it disappears. Being a manual the idle would your own personal preference for driveability and once you get the exhaust on you can stand at the back of the car and see what sounds the best.

Sounds awesome in the video. I am so impressed with the quality of work you have done to the car, it is a credit to you. We all wish our cars were done to the same standard.

Hate that too, be good to see how you do it Al, I have mine sitting with a block of wood under it to stop it losing shape, but that wont work on the car, LOL

Drilled an old bonnet this arvo to the same dimensions as my car bonnet and bolted the scoop on that and stuck it out in the sun.

As it heated up the center of the scoop came back nicely into shape with no warpage while it was hot....as the sun went down it reverted back to its cold shape with a dip right in the middle top of it.

I think its going to be a real challenge to reinforce it in its hot shape and keep it there.

Has anyone else had and solved this problem....I would really like to know as I need the scoop on for the blue slip.....the air filter just sticks through the hole and the blue slip guy said anything poking through the bonnet wont be passed.....sick of these rules lol

Hi Al

Don't know what the scoop is made of.

But if it plastic let it heat up in the sun again.

Before it can cool down try to some how keep it in place where you want it.

This will create a memory in the plastic, so it should keep it shape.

Like when you leave a garden hose in the sun & bend it it keeps the shape.

Where I work we would get a plastic tube wrap it around a pipe send stem though it , then cold water so it stayed in the new shape. To make those Spring like air lines.

Might be worth a try.

Victor

Ok here's my final update on Rusty's rebuild thread

I went for a rego blue slip (NSW) last week and passed no problems at all.......so Rusty is finally on the road after 8 years.

Its been fun doing the car but I sure am glad its finished....now its time for a rest.

I spent just under $26,000 on her but thats not including my time.....just materials and parts.

I manged to do all aspects of the car myself except the exhaust system and engine machining so I managed to save a packet doing it myself......and I must say It came out really nice.

Just like to thank all of you guys that helped out with advice and parts over the years......it would be nearly impossible to do this without your help.

So here she is...finished and registered

Also there is a little vid at the end of taking rusty for a squirt after tuning in the Quadrajet....its nothing special and really doesnt do the car justice but at least you can see what she goes like.

Heres a short vid giving her a run....not flogging it cause its still about 3/4 through run in but giving her a bit.

You cant capture the torque or the speed with an in car camera but she gets along nicely.

Anyway that was Rusty's rebuild thread.

Im SLAR (Al) signing off

Over and Out.....
