Hai guys, Im getting ready to purchase a brown davis 120L drop tank for my LH. Basically wanted to know some things about them before i get it.

First off, is it legal in WA? http://www.canberrat...droptank_2.html states that you will not need certification from an engineer in WA - is this the case? last thing i want is to get it here, on the car and driving then get sticker'd...

Second, mounting. I know they mount on the chassis rails, but do the original tank supports need cutting and moving to a new position..? im sure, once the tank is in my possession, i can trial mount it but pre-info is always handy...

Thirdly, will i need to retain my existing filler and pickup/gauge sender unit or does it come with one?

And finally, to those in WA, did you go straight thru Brown Davis to purchase you tank or did you go thru a certified Davis Dealer (Armadale 4WD)..?

Before you say "search button.." i did that and got nothing.

<3 Josh

a few more points i really should have added to the first post.

Im hoping for the strapped tank look. ideally i want the tank to bolt to the chassis rails as per brown davis tanks and have the straps for aesthetic purposes..

Also, I dont have a spare wheel well in the boot any more, so the tank wont need that cut away part, would this just be something i tell them when ordering?

And finally (promise this time..) are there any places local, here in Perth, who make tanks for torries which conform to the road standards who i can get in contact with..?

The Brown Davis tanks are not legal in WA under the NCOP. Plenty of cars gone over the pits with tanks that don't comply with the NCOP however it would be a risk.

You have to remove the rear strap mounts from the body to fit a Brown Davis tank. You could still have fake straps mounted to the tank if you want.

I had a few Brown Davis tanks on my cars, just like the look. They claim their tanks are engineered and legal but apparently its not so, the departure angle of the tank is to big versus what you are allowed to have, sure most likely you won't get picked but just letting you know. I live about 2k from Brown Davis factory hence why I bought them and the look of course. Brown Davis has a tendency to tell fibs as with my last tank they said if I wanted one I would have to wait 4 weeks as they are swampt so I said thanks, on my way out the door they stoped me saying that a customer just rang and cancelled his order and I could have his but have to wait 2 days. Two days later I noticed their ads for tanks on ebay with availability of 6 tanks straight of hand and a cheaper price, wasn't I pead off. Just for that I won't do anymore business with them. Setting my expirience with them aside they are a great quality tank and like mentioned above ordre one with a surge tank inbuilt and 1/2 inch lines just in case you want to go big or EFI in the future.

The swirl pot in the Brown Davis tank I had was a bit of a joke. Definitely not suitable for EFI.

I ordered one with every tank I bought from them but never ended up using that kind set up as none of my motors were serious enough, so you would recommend going for a stand alone setup?

BTW last time I bought a tank from them they asked me which one I wanted, the 90L or 120L tank so it seems they also make smaller tanks for the Torrie for anyone wanting one.

The Brown Davis swirl pot is basically a box around 200mm x 200mm x 50mm with one or two holes in it for the fuel to flow in. There is no provision for a return line back into the box so an EFI system would drain it in seconds during fuel surge. The Brown Davis swirl pot would be ok for a carby system that does not have a bypass line as long as the tank is about 1/3 full.

This is a photo taken from a video inside the tank.

If you want to guarantee fuel supply to an EFI system when the fuel tank is low then you really need a surge tank with a return line from the EFI plumbed into the tank. In most cases you will need a lift pump to fill the surge tank. On some cars there is room to gravity feed the surge tank.

I have a BD tank in my Torana that was fitted in 1988. When I took my Torrie over the pits here in WA I required it to be 'engineered' and stamped before they would pass it. I saw an engendering firm who had inspected many drop tanks over the years and in their words they said my tank is one of the best built they had ever seen and the Instal was second to none. On a different note I was lucky I guess to get away with the departure angle. :)
