Can anyone tell me please if any of the electric 'Little Beaver' type spray guns are suitable for spraying sound deadener... ?

I see in a well-known hardware chain there is a vast range of these implements priced up to around $300 but do they have the capacity to spray something like sound deadener or stoneguard ?

Dunno, I had a bad experience with them when I was 16.  In hindsight though, I had NFI what I was doing.  Pretty sure I was using the wrong thinners.

You can buy pretty decent spray guns with the three different needles and nozzles now, high volume, low pressure gravity fed.  I'd just grab a compressor and one of those outfits.  You won't look back.  Even spray can paint ups look bad now.

Think they are 1.2, 1.6, and 2.0mm tips.  2.0mm is the one you want for the job, or is it bigger?  Can't remember, too lazy to go look down in the shed.

Thanks Bomber, learn something new every day.  Never sprayed body deadener, or had the need so far.

I don't have mains power here and only have an old 5 KVA generator. I've been told that compressors need a pretty powerful generator otherwise I would have bought one by now.

Yeah 5kva would run one but prolly wouldnt start one.

Considered looking for a second hand petrol compressor?

Anyway, TBH no idea about the beaver type things, house paint is pretty thick, so look at whats required thinning wise to spray it through them, if no thinners is required they might be ok.

THAT SAID, If i was in your position i'd just use brushcoat body deadner. Brush it on, all done, i have a compressor, and a body deadner gun, and plenty of power, and i still brushed it onto the floor of the last car i cleaned up due to being to lazy to turn the compressor on and then have to clean out the deadner gun.

Cheers.

I've been thinking that I should find out from the electrician who last repaired my generator how big a compressor motor it would run.

I was told that a compressor big enough to paint a car would require a bigger generator by the spray painter who painted my Hilux. He had a 7KVA and said it would not run his compressor which was not particularly large.

So can anyone tell me how big a compressor tank and motor (electric) would be required to squirt on sound deadener please ?

Edit:

Thanks Bomber but I brushed on the sound deadener on the last two cars I did and was hoping to avoid it if possible due to the extended time exposed to the fumes. And yes, I do have a mask.

But I will brush it on if I have to.

I brushed on for the race wreck.  Ormonoid (bitumen) paint.

High Volume Low Pressure (HVLP) guns don't need much air, about 40psi with acrylic.  Dunno what 2 pack needs, I don't use it.

Pay, HVLP guns need high volume low pressure, thats what HVLP means.....YOu actually need a BIGGER compressor to run a hvlp gun. 2k needs less than acrylic as its thinner.

To the OP....

Do you have a Carbon filter Sundstrom?

sr100_510.jpg

LIke that, but with the P3/A1 filters.....

That one only has the P3.

This is the A1, the brown one, you dont need anything better for body deadner.

sundstrom-respirator-filter-a1-sr217.jpg

Little paper P1 or P2 masks are useless.

If you have a proper mask you shouldnt smell the fumes at all.

Also, there are more fumes spraying it....

And you will need a compressor just as large as you would need to paint a car to run a body deadner gun...

Im sounding awfully glum arnt i???

Sorry bout that, i like to call a spade a spade.

Cheers.

I have a $40 something dollar Protector twin filter jobby.

I had a CIG or some such good name brand single filter type before but they apparently stopped making the single filter cartridges so I bought this one.

I do appreciate all your advice.

And yeah, I've been keeping my eye on the local Trader mag for a petrol powered compressor.

Sundstrom is about $120 trade price, so without doing any research im going to assume mines better :P

Kinda like the whole mines bigger thing, but without the need to remove pants....

Mmmm.... I was just about to get the brush out and start sniffing that wonderful intoxicating aroma...

I have a mate up North who swears by Brush On Sound Deadener 50/50 with Fish Oil. I know it may sound like BS to some but this guy has multiple old Holdens he does up himself, used to own a servo with a RACQ Service, now does mechanics from his home shed for locals and last time I was there his nephew was spraying his EH ute, Hothouse Green, supercharged V6 semi showcar underneath with that exact same brew.

Anyone else tried this ?

Sorry guys.... nothing to see here..... move along.......

I've heard they're perfectly adequate for squirting on hi-fill too.

Is that so the body deadner washes off when you no longer want it or is this just a side affect?

Fish oil is the lameness, water washes it out, its useless and shouldnt even be on the market anymore.

Cheers.

When Sound Deadener is new the sh!t that makes it go off is pretty volatile. I think that might harden it up.

I've had good results with Fish Oil. I put quite a few litres into the HZ and the body on that is still good 12 years later, probably half that time under a tarp but the rest of the time out in the weather including a couple of cyclones in FNQ.

I also did the doors on my old Hilux 2 years ago, no bubbles yet, and that is never under cover.

You can also get good long term results on rust repairs with it I've found, but I won't go into that now.

anyway all I can tell you is the little beaver he used was the blue [ cig ] one // had plastic gun & plastic pot . when I looked at it I thought what a piece of shit setup . till I watched him spray . he used  motorspray stonegaurd - not deadner . I do know the whole car  looks better than some shop jobs ive seen . not to mention the ones on forums & some cars ive seen at shows . .your choice mate . personly I use my compressor setup . brother used his cig sprayer from everything to stonegaurd to undercoat / putty / top coat & clear coats . seeing is believing . sorry to be so disappointing to all the so called experts .

Was always a little embarrassed to admit it but I used to spray with one of these cig beavers too. They can spray just fine and I've got pics of dozens of cars I've sprayed to prove it. Plus you never get contamination from water in your lines like you do with a compressor....

Many decades ago ( about 3) I bought one ( the original little beaver) and sprayed a few cars with it including metallic paint and it did an excellent job considering it was a home job and I was inexperienced in painting cars.

Tried it with house paint but didn't have much luck with that.

Still got it too this day, might drag it out and see if it still works.
