My engine is almost run in and will be going back to the shop in the next few weeks. What oil filter do you guys use and recommend? I have seen the K&N ones on ebay for not much and I think they are a smaller filter which would look a bit better in my engine bay. Happy to hear the pro's and con's of different types though.

I use the smaller commodore Ryco one, no issues.

The K & N's for about $9 are pretty good, I know a few guys who use them...I just never seemed to give them a go?  (the nut on the bottom might be handy for some folks)

I have always just used A/C delco stuff or Wix brand (from here...real nice quality ones)

I fitted a Z30 for the first few 100 kays, then fitted the AC Delco one I had PFA10 or something? I noticed a distinct drop in oil pressure with this filter fitted. Went and bought another Z30 to put on, oil pressure back where it used to be?

It's amazing how much variation there is amongst different brands in the internals, both in quality and area. Wix, Ryco, Fleetguard and Baldwin are all very good, with Baldwin usually having the greatest area. I'm very wary of anything from K&N, and the AC stuff from recent years is pretty poor.

I only use K&N - made in the US.   Pretty much everything else you can buy in OZ is made in unsavoury places now.

I was thinking of buying one of these but if only some of you recommend them and some dont probably not a good sign.

The Yanks can make stuff that's every bit as bad as the Chinese. Some of the really big US brands are little more than marketing companies. In a way you have to admire them - they are enormously successful both in sales and in generating a reputation and brand awareness despite making what's basically just a wide range of very mediocre products.

I always buy Ryco.

Bob Kotmel reckons they're pretty good too.

i just replaced a z160 K & N today on my VT 5.0,,, i used the same again as im sold on the hype about the finer filtering and better quality etc etc. they cost a bit more than the ryco but i had no probs in 10,000 ks with the KnN...

Does anybody make a similar oil filter to the K&N is size. I quite like the size of it over the one I have now which is a large white filter, not sure what brand it is. I guess the internals is the most important thing though.

What about an AC Delco PF24 , or are they too tall for what you want ?

Don't think you get them there, but Wix brand is what I use on the Torana and they are good quality too... (they are a standard sort of line and a race line too from memory)

Thanks Jeff some interesting differences in these filters. I guess I need to get the one that best suits my application. Engine is brand new with only 800km on it so far so should I get the finest of filters or the coarsest?

All of these filters are of similar size with the K&N being the longest. The only real difference in all of them is the particle filtering as follows.

Particle filter

Wix 51258-21 microns

K&N PS 2003-10 microns

AC Delco PF24 and the Fram PH25 are both 18 microns

I guess the more finer filter you get the more you have to do an oil change, I am just not sure which filter will best suit.

I quite like this Fram filter actually but what is this anti drainback valve thingy?

Oh and before I forget Jeff I think the filter I have on at the moment is a tall filter but I would prefer a smaller one like these.

I would tend to stay away from Fram....read some pretty average luck with them on more than one occasion. (poor quality internals, etc)

A mate of mine has recently built two engines.. a 383 Chev for his '72 C10, and a 347 windsor for his Mustang..he has been running K&N on them both as recommended by the engine shop...no issues for him at least. (think the truck is up to about 5000 - 7000 miles on it total so far and a little more on the mustang)

I had used the Delco ones on all my daily driver vehicles (the aftermarket ones seemed to give more clattery noise in the morning on my late model LS powered trucks) but tried the Wix on recommendations from a bunch of people for the Torana and it works great too.

Can't say for sure on the micron size rating though in regards to the new engine personally..,aside from what my buddy has ran (but maybe his engine machine shop has never tried wix ? lol)

Seriously just go to your local allfleet or similar and pick up a fleetguard or baldwin.

Half the price and twice as good.

They also sell some sakura or similar brand that i have had good luck with.

My reasoning is if these filters are good enough for million dollar machinery they should be fine for my rubbish.

Cheers.

Many engines have been run in on ryco and then used all the time
never had a problem with them at all over the years

This, exactly.

Here's an idea: talk to the Maintenance Managers that are in charge of fleets worth 100 million dollars or more. Ask them if they use K&N filters, and how long would they keep their job if they started having chronic failures. While you're at it ask them what filters they use; almost certainly it will be one of Fleetguard, Baldwin, Wix or Donaldson. All of these would have had 1000 times the development of some 2-bob "performance" filter with chequered flags printed on it. And if you think some shit-hot race-engine builder knows more about filters than these guys you're kidding yourself.

Lol at the guys saying "I've been using brand X of shitcan performance filters for 20,000km without problems". Shit, you could run an empty canister for 20k and not notice anything. It's only when something goes wrong or you run for extended periods that you'll appreciate a good filter (and remember 20,000+ hours or a million-plus miles isn't unusual in fleet applications). 20,000ks is like a blink of an eye.

To answer your earlier question.
The large filter you currently have fitted will be a Z30 as per the ryco designation.
The smaller filter used VN V8 onwards is a Z160.
The smaller filter gives a little more room for the lower radiator hose. They allegedly give oil pressure a bit quicker on cold startup.
Use whatever your engine builder wants you to until your warranty period is over.

just on the K&N filters the PS (Pro Series) is a "high flow" filter and doesnt offer the filtration that the standard HP series does..which i use

they were designed that way to stop the filter bursting or blowing out the seal as can happen on cold start up in race engines

You sure thats right Tim? The PS2003 has a filtration of a 10 micron filter which is double the filtration of all the other filters I have seen or have been suggested on this thread. So if anything you would think it would be less flow instead of higher flow wouldnt you?

A plain old Baldwin B9 is good for 200psi and their heavy duty filters go to 600psi. The other professional filter manufacturers units would be similar.  I think if you're getting more than that from a cold start you need to preheat the oil or rethink your oil system. And be very very wary of manufacturers micron ratings, they mightn't always mean what you think they do..
