Hi,

I am in the process of installing a Celica 5 speed W50 into my previously trimatic LJ. Motor is a worked 186. All going well but have had to cut the gearshift hole an inch or so further back towards the handbrake than the floorshift auto. When going into 2nd and 4th the gearshift will hit the handbrake handle. I don't necessarily need a quick shift but as it is will look too high. I need to get a shorter gearshift with a bend to bring it a bit forward. Have tried Castlemaine Rod Shop and Dellows but no luck. Anybody know or a successful shifter that will fit. The original one is approx 300mm and looks too tall.

Thanks.

When I did this mod many many moons ago, the shifter came up right in the correct spot in my LC.  I know these come in at least 2 different shifter locations, possible more.  May be easier to change the shifter for one that fits the existing hole.

All the short shifters I have seen for these move the pivot up so the gear knob is actually still in the same overall height and are about the length you say.  If you want it shorter and a short shift, you could just mod the one you have - then you will end up with a short shift and a lower gear knob.  This is a little tricky because of the rubber in the middle but I have seen it done on a toyota forum somewhere ages ago.

Sorry, probably didn't make myself clear. Previous gearbox was a trimatic with floor shift. The Celica 5 speed manual gearshift hole is a few inches back, probably just too close to the handbrake (when in the off position)

Yeah mine was spot on the distance from the handbrake.  Was the auto floor hole different to the manuals?  Mine was a column auto originally but had the plate there covering the hole in the floor when I removed the vinyl to cut the hole - I assumed that hole suited either auto or manual.

Have a look at this site - they show 2 different versions of the W50.

http://users.tpg.com.../gearboxes.html

Second picture down, second G/box from left shows a shifter that looks a bit further forward.  4th picture down shows one that is further back.  It is far too long ago for me to remember which one I had but I know I started out with a W40 4 speed and when I lew that (ran it out of oil) I then swapped for a W50 and they swapped straight over no hassles.

I've just done a Toyota box conversion in my LJ that was previously a column auto.

My gearbox had a remote shifter so I needed to change the position to ensure it wouldn't hit the handbrake and used a Dellow quick shift kit at the 18 inch position.  It slots up exactly where the original manual shifter would have been as the tunnel reinforcing plate was already cut and the new hole is completely within that original hole.

I believe Dellow have 4 different positions available, somewhere from 18 inch to 22.5 inch I think, and you can get the normal shift or the quick shift.  The distance is measured from the join between the gearbox and bellhousing.

Here's a link to how my one turned out.  I've used a W58 box but they are the same length as the W50 so the measurements should work.

Definitely a much more expensive fix than just getting a bent shifter but let me know if you need any more details.

I reckon this is the shifter you need to get it in the right spot.

There are 3 gearshift locations available on the W50 boxes. 18", 20" & 21.5".

If you're not keen on chasing down one of the different location shifter housings and arent worried about originality,

I shortened the handbrake handle (and gave it a slight shift to the left of the tunnel) to have it clear in the racecar.

It was more about seating-gearstick-wheel positioning though.

Thanks to those who responded to my request. Have now installed gearbox, taken a bit off the end of handbrake handle, shortened gearshift and all is looking good. Next question is whether a standard manual LJ console would fit over the gearshift properly. I don't want to fork out $$$ on a new console to discover that it is set too far back to fit properly.

If your shifter hole has moved back "a few inches" then you might be in trouble with the standard console.  Here's a pic of mine with the console dropped on top, not sure if it's in the absolute correct position but I just moved it around till it sat flat on the tunnel without any wobble.

The second photo is a measurement from the console shifter hole to the rear of the console and came out at about 190mm with another 15mm or so to the handbrake light switch bracket.

Hope this is helpful.
