Sentimental, maybe
I love a challenge i guess, the more i read about this motor the more i liked it over the years.
The motor is an engineering great i believe.

strong and realiable yes, potential hp yes, but out of the box their a touch sluggish.

However i have a neighbour who threw one in a hq or hz ute a few years back, ill ask him how he went baout htings for you

Thanks mate :spoton:

Ok, there is good news and bad of course
The bad news is i can alter/modify, infact i can put in new rails all together if i want BUT the whole car will have to comply to current 2006 guide lines as an engineer told me today, he also said a ball park figure would be approx 50 grand to achieve this, my thought, well you can imagine my thought, it started with an F and ended with a K.
So thats^ the bad news

The good news is that i tried the engine without the cam covers and hay presto the fat bitch fits with 10mm of space to spare, and yes that isnt quite enough, i believe 13mm is the minimum so i believe (have to confirm this) 4mm can be shaved off along the top corner/shoulder of the heads, this will allow 13-14mm clearance on both sides of the heads to rails.
The front of the rails will have to be notched a bit to clear the cam chains.
On the rear part of the rails of the drivers side the rail actually widens for some strange reason where the passenger side is consistant in width, i dont think anyone will miss this widened section when it mysteriously dissapears, so it will look identical to the passenger side rail.
Custom cam covers will be needed or the current ones will need the same area machined like the corner/shoulders of the heads.

Passenger side 10mm

Drivers side 10mm, note the rail near to the fire wall end is a bit wider for some shit reason and the passenger side isnt.

Passenger side cam chain, this end of the rail will need to be notched.

Thanks mate i hope it works out.
I cant take the credit for removing the cam covers lol, it was Makkas idea and my dad.
In desperation after calling the engineer, i felt as a last straw i should take the cam covers off and see where it comes, so it has left me 10mm like i said and some shaving of the head corners, i hope the heads dont object to this by warping or anything silly like that   or cracking.
The only thing is what the hell is on the drivers side rail, why does the rail widen near the fire wall and the passenger side rail is a consistant width?? (dosnt widen)

ive heard these motors tend to like boost :spoton: any chance of seing a turbo in that engine bay with all that room you have?

just a question about your motor, did it come from japan or the us? the reason i ask is that there is quite a significant difference between the two motors even thought they are built the same and have the same parts. I know sounds confusing, but its all to do with emission controls and compression levels.

Can anyone explain why the drivers side chassis rail gets wider near the fire wall, under the brake booster???
Is this to stiffen the fire wall for the brake booster?

The motor came from Japan through SSS Auto, it cost me a grnd which was pretty good considering every body else wanted $2000-$2500.
Looking at the cam lobes there inst much wear as far as i can see so they are a very well built motor, much like the RB motors only better.

Yeah the plan is twin turbo, the manifolds will have to come from under therails and if i want them in the engine bay theyll have to go up through the inner gaurds, so ill have to cut a hole through the inner gaurds to poke the manifold through.
