Possibly the 2 x 10in will be enough with your better rad.
I dont see any value in having one fan come on by the thermostat and the other manually.......it only brings human error, it will happen eventually you cant watch the temp gauge all the time. Its not going to preserve the life of the fans any more than having them both on the thermostat, when triggered theyll run for half as long as when only one wired in.

Thus the 10" fans can have a flow rate 75%less and still pump as much air over a wider area.

Spread the flow over a greater area and more cooling will result.
We need to remember that the main aim is to use the radiator to remove heat from the coolant.
The greater AREA of significant airflow will reduce the tendency of hotspots and flow-around to occur.
And you are exactly correct that a good shroud is worth its weight in gold.
The flow-rate is only an expression of how much air that fan can push/pull. Cooling is a whole different science that this factors into.
You can compare 2 fans, eg. 10" and 16", but it will still come down to flowrate/area.

I've just been on the davis craig website and the 10" should leave around 10mm spare, mounted side by side in front of the radiator. Does that sound about right? And for the record, I just measured my old fan and its a 14" not 16" as I previously said. Milco do you have a pic of your setup that I could have a look at?i havew twin 10" thermos mounted in my lj, anf they fit perfectly, i mean perfect.......... ( in front of the radiator.)
